During my swap the driver side axle has been on the transmission just sitting there, it is rebuilt as of not too long ago I believe. The issue is the inside CV joint felt good before and now it just dangles loose and when I put it back in place it has a lot of play. I don't know much about axles so I'm wondering if I messed it up or if it is a simple fix?

It pops out of easily and when it is "in" it has a little wiggle room, there is also some rotational play such that when switching rotational direction it will rotate for a little before engaging. I hope that makes sense. I compared it to my other getrag which still has the axles in and that one is very tight and reactive in comparison.

Any idea what went wrong/how to fix it? I will probably end up just switching axles if it's too much work

not real sure if it has just been setting.. pull the axle apart and check where the play is... are you sure it isn't just a little play in the trans?

It is not damaged unless it was impacted HARD or the boot is tore IMO. should be no slop WITHIN the joint when you twist.

Could be that the rollers pulled out of the Tripot and one of the rollers fell off the spider? Remove the clamp on the large end of the boot and take a look. You can get new boot clamps and CV Grease to reassemble - but, if a roller came off, there are 20 or 30 needle bearings that came out as well!
