I'd like to incrementally upgrade my Fiero from the 2.8/auto to the stock 2.8 with an F23 while I'm building a 3800 S/C swap over the next year or so.
What I need to know first is how to build the F23 mounts that are low enough (or who sells a kit) for the 3800 S/C to mount an intercooler eventually (preferably the full stack) but will still work with the 2.8 / F23 before that. Are there any other issues that would keep me from doing this? I'm assuming I'll need to notch the deck lid, but that's no problem.
86 fastback. I'd just go right to the 3800, but I want the car drivable sooner, the 2.8 runs well, and I've already put money into fixing its exhaust and some other parts. I'm not sure I want to sink that much more into a swap right now until I find out whether I'm keeping my current job or getting the new one I'm trying for.
Thanks for the advice everyone. That's what I'd rather do, but that wasn't my question. I'm waiting on a few things before I can do the engine swap but I'd love to have go from auto to a nice 5 speed now since it's the same one I'll be using later.
I'm planning on doing something similar with mine. that is, bolt the F23 to my 2.5 now then an engine swap later. It may be twice as much work but it doesn't cost more if I'm doing the work myself. The thing is that I'm in college and this is what I can afford now.
Curious but something to consider. The stock V6 is a 60o engine and the 3800 a 90o engine. The actual engines location in the bay with one being wider than the other may change where the trans has to sit. You may end up having to make the mounts for the trans twice and possibly even shift cables and other parts. Does anybody know if this would be the case?
I'm counting on possibly needing to make separate trans mounts for the 3800 later, or whatever engine I choose. Not much else needs to be "twice the work". Trans mounts, flywheel, HTOB spacing.
Engine mount needs to be made anyway, clutch line can stay the same, master cylinder, slave adapter, pedal set and manual shifter, cradle and rear suspension restored/upgrades, digital dash module. All this will stay the same on my car.
