I have an 04 Silverado 2500HD gas. It has the floor shifter for the 4DW. I have always been able to go into 4WD while driving, I’ve always kept it under 40 and let off the gas then pull the shifter into 4WD HI. I haven’t used the 4WD for almost 6 months so yesterday I decided to try it. I let off the throttle pull the shifter down and it started to grind. I came to a stop at the next town pulled down on the shifter and it went into 4WD. I was going about 25 MPH and shifted into 2WD no problem. Tried to go back to 4WD when moving and it started to grind. Any idea as to why now I have to be stopped to go into 4WD?

4 WD is electrically done in the front axel pumpkin, the solenoid may be gone you can check it by removing the solenoid and have someone else put it in 4 WD with the ignition on and watch the solenoid. They do all the time and are expensive parts at the dealers, parts stores are cheaper and some places even sell a mechanical cable to fix it so the electronic part is never a problem again.

Sounds like the servo could be hanging up. They can go out too but for now you may want to consider full stop shifts.
