Seen a new ad on tv about the new Scion 'sports car'. They tout that its the first car to utilize the 'boxer' engine technology of horizontaly opposed cylinders....WTF !!

Far as I know, Porsche, Ferrari, Volkswagen, and Corvair have all had them for many years......???

They collaborated with Subaru on the project (the cars are virtually identical) and thus it has a Subaru engine in it.

My point being this isnt a new engine. In fact it dates back to 30s Volkwagen. In aircraft this engine has been around even longer than that. Cessnas still use the same basic engine since 1942, as well as Piper Cubs.

They both worked on the engine design, ground up.

It is "new," since it hasn't been in a previous model before

So, does it use a "Subaru" design and parts (not wanting to argue-just curious)?

The commercial says it's the first boxer engine with some specific fuel injection. I thought the same thing when I heard it the first time but after a long pause they add the part about the FI system.

Subaru BRZ = Scion FR-S

I love how Toyota is playing up the heritage of the FR-S, relating it to the RWD AE86 and other Toyota non-Supra sports cars of yester year... while using a Subaru powerplant and the Scion name. LOL

A Subie without AWD and a corporate rebadged Toyota with an outsourced drivetrain. What tangled webs we weave.

I still want one...

Well boxer engined Porsches also have FI.....? There ad tries to make this sound like a revolutionary new engine like the Wankel when in fact its 90 year old tech with fuel injection.

As mentioned above... for Toyota owners... this is a whole new world. Every car company promotes themselves as the only car company.

On a similar note, I love how manufacturers hype their stuff.

Heres a new, low production, 'high demand' XB.

http://www.scion.com/releaseseries/

Sooooooooooooo, its got orange paint and a lite up grill badge..... Fieros have lite up 'PONTIAC', and they come in yellow ....like 20 years ago, lol.

So do I.

The Subie has different suspension tuning. Supposedly a little softer ride, and a little harder to "get loose". It's also more expensive.
Both of them are designed to be "drift rockets", however.

I would imagine that the boxer engine can be modded to hell and back. Subaru folks would know.

Okay so the claims of the worlds first horizintally oppossed boxer engine is justified by the next line in the add " with D4S direct and port fuel injection technology". Apparantly no boxer engine has come with that stuff before this one.

I have to agree with Roger though. When I first saw the add I was thinking "WTF? There have been ALOT of cars with Boxer engines.".

Almost 27k for the auto with paddle shifters and 26k for the 6 speed manual. I been checking into them. I love the look. Come pretty loaded too for those prices.

I love the fender bulges like for aggressive big tires. They dont come within a foot or two of the tire tops....lol. The only way the tire would come up to fill that bulge is if you dropped it on the ground from an airplane. Sorry, I just dont like asian cars styling but thats just me. I dont get why they make these huge fenders, big cutouts and put Hot Wheels toy tires on them. They look like Mustangs/Camaros with riding mower tires. If you want those big power bulges, lower the body down to where they look functional at least.

I believe they have it at that height for regulation purposes and what not, with the expectation being that everyone who buys one will lower it.

I can by that. The only problem with that is that the rockers will be dragging on the ground before the fenders ever come close to covering the tires The only tires that can fill those wheelwells are on semi/ off road trucks....

Idk, preference I guess. I PERSONALLY don't like when the wheel gap is 1 cm.
And on a side note, this car was aimed toward handling rather than ultimate grip, so one requirement in its design was the use of "skinny" tires.

Technically, it wasn't a lie though. Yes other makers have produced Boxer engines for year. However this is the first Boxer engine "with D4S direct and port fuel injection technology".
