Just for testing, I enabled "Auto Ads" for the Google ads that I use on PFF. Boy was that a mistake. Google inserted ads in the weirdest of places like in the middle of posts. I've disabled Auto Ads completely but the ads are still showing up. I'm not sure if it takes a while for the Auto Ads to be disabled, or that something is wrong and it is still enabled. I'll wait and see.
In the mean time, my apologies for all the weirdly placed ads.
I am experimenting with ad placement and such. So please, any feedback (like where you don't want to see them and where you don't mind seeing them) is very much appreciated!
They are a little large and did surprise me at first. If they only remain after the first post, it's something that I can get used to. Just wouldn't be a fan if they were after every other comment.

We know that ads are needed to generate revenue and that one column of ads that we see on the side is not a distraction, but when adds start popping up in the middle of a thread that's annoying, and will reduce the hits on the site. Good job keeping them limited.

The only ad that I've found intrusive so far was a popup add on mobile. When I hit the reply to thread button an add popped up taking the entire page. I find that type of ad annoying. The ones inserted periodically between posts seems totally normal since Facebook, Instagram and pretty much every other social media does the same.
Lets offer Cliff some feedback as he needs to monetize the site to keep it going for us good folks. Any suggestions will be welcomed. Click a few ads guys.

I get ads on my mobile, but my lap top only shows blank spaces. I assume that there is an ad blocker on my end. Is the forum receiving an ad hit, or am I blocking that out from Pennocks?
If so, can I add Pennocks so that I can receive this forum's ads?

All the time? I'm seeing the same thing on some threads where no ads are displayed at all. I have no idea why. It started when I added new ad positions.

Yes. I got the side bar ads before, but now I only get a space where an ad should be.
I am sure this is on my end. Well, as sure as I could be. It is only on my lap top. I receive ads on my android, and my Wife's lap top.
Edit: Is there an advertisement below my post? I see a blank immediately after.

Interesting. In Firefox (my primary browser) I don't see ads, in Chrome I do. So far as I know, none of my firefox extensions or plugins (I only have a few) have anything to do with hiding ads so no idea why it's happening.
------------------ Anything I might say is probably worth what you paid for it, so treat it accordingly!
After the first day and the explanation I never gave then a second notice. I already scroll past things that don't effect me and this is just a few more. Do what you need to do. Thank goodness we don't have to deal with popups.
Something seems to have disappeared (It may have been discussed already and I missed it).
When making a reply to a thread, I used to be able to see a thread review area just below the reply dialog box. (You could scroll up thru it and look at posts that had already been made in the thread.) On my laptop---Win10 and using Chrome browser) that option seems to no longer be available.

Ah yes, that's a bug. I made a few changes to the internal code last week (unrelated to the ads) and I apparently forgot something. I will fix that in a few minutes.
Cliff, are you seeing any positive results for you, or is it too early to tell?
Yes, I do see an increase in ad revenue of about 40%. But I'm not sure if that's because of the new ads, or because people are maybe actually clicking ads every now and then to help me.
I'mm seeing them, and I'm fine with that. this is for your survival, so, do what you must.
Most are Google search history related, so I'm okay with them. Nothing weird or NSFW (I'm at work right now.)
Would it increase your income for me to click on them? Some are places I'd go for work reasons anyway. Should I just go to PFF and click through from there, rather than going to my book marked favorite?
For years, If people have FF w/ NoScript then most Won't see PFF ads unless you Turn On the 3rd party scripts used by them. Likely won't see the New ads now for same reason.
Most PFF pages even on the reply page uses scripts from: facebook.net viglink.com googletagmanager.com googlesyndication.com
That's w/ and w/o adblock and other privacy tools and before FF new versions blocks more and more tracker sites as default settings too. Other plugins block more tracking. Examples: Privacy Badger block FB Like image and replaces that because that One FB image tracks everyone everywhere. uBlock can block anything on a page. Don't want Clock2.swf on PFF Threads? This Can block it beyond Chrome and FF won't display flash by default now.
The clock should be removed because most browsers block Flash and soon even Adobe won't support Flash.

Hey Cliff, so today when I got on the forum, it started showing me ads for things I had open in other browser windows, something a little too specific to have been coincidence. Are these ads actually spyware? If so, I can't say I'll be hanging around. I want you to be compensated for your efforts, but my privacy is more valuable to me than a forum.

Did you google the specific item then have it show up in an ad? That's how it works, look up cookie, every site on the internet does it unless you block them on your end.. I cant tell you how embarrassing it is when ukulele ads keep showing up at work after checking my email. Google knows.

As has been pointed out, it's not this forum which is spying on you. The ads you see here (and anywhere else where ads appear) are simply the result of information already gathered on your viewing habits.

Yep, mptighe: It's an almost sure thing that it's your own browser that is doing this...or 3rd party programs your browser allows to run. Keep in mind tho, that YOU are probably the only one seeing those specific ads...the rest of us see ads tailored to and harvested from our own unique browsing history.
