I am looking at what the seller says is a 1984 V6 Fiero... Is there such a thing? It does have a 2.8 in it, but he swears its a 1984.... Just checking. Thanks.
The 1984 model ran from July of 83 to the end of 1984 equipped with a 2.5L for the Coupe, Sports Coupe and SE. The 140 hp 2.8L V6 was available in the 1985 GT trim model which arrived in Showrooms in January of 1985. This information is common knowledge so barring any anomalies that I am unaware of, it sounds like the car in question has had a motor swap or there is some confusion as to the production date. Check the vin and confirm.
OK help me read this because I am confused with the code reading myself. Because the title says 1984 and it has an R code of 9... Which says v6. I am CONFUSED lol.
Looks like a motor swap. The A/C Heater Climate controller has been swapped out to an 85-88 from it's original 1984 version. I also notice that the car only retains one original 1984 power window switch vs. the driver side which has been replaced.
It also has the cooling tubes for the coil/distributor...... Interesting.
I see one cooling tube.... and any output from it would appear to be blocked by a non-factory heat shield. The top of the distributor looks a little odd as well.
Need to verify VIN on inner wheel well. If it is missing, pull the left front speaker out of the dash, there is a VIN on the steering wheel support directly below the speaker opening. Trans and engine also have partial VIN numbers.
i also picked up a 1984 v6 fiero. Definitely started out as a 2.5. Someone swapped in a 2.8, also put an aero nose on it, and newer style decklid and vents, and newer rear bumper. So it does happen.
There is a Date of Manufacture stamped on the info tag. This is NOT however reliable to the model year if its in the fall, during model changeover. It could be manufactured in say Sept but be the next model year car. The VIN however will lead you to exactly what year it is. Check several of the VIN ID points though, just the dash one can be changed if its stolen. They cant change them all. I may be wrong, but especially back then didnt the original engine have a matching number ? If thats the case, the engine number matching the VIN number will prove that engine came in that car.
