I purchased an 84 a while back and I can see a lot of new parts that the previous owner installed. I'm trying to decide whether to pursue the repair or get a different engine. If I replace the 2.5 will I have to use an 84 engine to avoid all of this. Thanks

if i were you i would definitely use an 84-86 iron duke with a distributor. they are all the same. this was way too much of a hassle for what it was worth.

No but FWD cars w/ VIN R engine are setup w/ PS pump etc so you have to change alt and other brackets for Fiero.
84 engine have some parts different vs 85-86.
You can swap whole engine but internal block and some parts are different.
