i have 2 new fwd H.O. euro quad 4 getrags for sale. rodney has conversion items to make these work in a fiero. these bolt up to the quad4 bellhousing but you can take your old getrag bellhousing and change it to this new trans and it works. the gearing is for higher revving engines such as the quad 4 and others... maybe 3.4 dohc? anyhow these are NEW zero mile units. $350.00 plus shipping each.

EDIT; these are the very desireable gearboxes that have the H.O. quad4 heavy duty differentials and spider gears. these are stronger than the normal fiero 282 getrag counterparts.

the name of it is a "284" trans.
you're asking a very small amount for a "NEW" 284 trans. what year was it made in?

This is NOT a 284... that transmission only came behind the 3.4TDC . The Q4 transmissions are the from the 282 family but with a different bell housing.

yes these are 282 trans derivitives you need to change the bell housing and use rodney's conversion parts for the install. other than that they use your same clutch hardware and axles and mounts.

You can basically get a new Getrag this way a lot cheaper than buying a new Getrag (If you can even find one). I think the gearing is shorter for the Q4 282's though...probably good for a DOHC engine, maybe not so good for a TQ monster. I could be wrong about the gearing, though...

madance... i was thinking the same about the gearing. i think it would be an excellent tranny for a 3.4 dohc or a nstar dohc. but this would be a good option for anyone wanting a new getrag scenario no matter what engine they have. only reason im selling is im going new cobalt f23 lsd route now.

i checked ups online shipping and it looks like if i wrapped the trans in paper, cardboard and bubble wrap and drop it inside a new tote box and secured it then shipped ups ground to your doorstep it would be around 110.00 shipping in the lower 48 states. if you have a better or cheaper way im all ears. thanks, mike in oklahoma

That is how I've done it...and it worked well. Price is also on target with what it cost me.

Lowes used to sell some heavy tote boxes for about $15... perfect size for shipping a getrag. Just put a piece of plywood on the bottom, drill a few holes, bolt the tranny down and then bolt the top on:

If its under 100 lbs, Greyhound could do it for about $65 pickup at station.

I believe you can swap the stock Fiero 1/2 gearset in to get rid of the granny 1st, and build a nice "close ratio" 5-speed with the closer 4/5 gearset and steeper final drive ratio. What is the final drive ratio on these boxes?

rick, these have the 3.94 final ratio they would be a great 3.4 dohc or nstar dohc trans. but anyone wanting a new getrag could benefit from these. use it as is or take it apart and put the larger diff and spider gears in your existing getrag along with the new bearings and syncros etc. lots of options with these gearboxes.

When I first looked into buying one of these of Ebay, I was told you could swap the case half. I was then informed by several people that the input and output shafts were of different lengths and therefore you could only have a shop press gears off and onto a Fiero shaft. The diff however is much beefier and a much better diff for a 3800 swap as that is what blows out in them. You would also have to alter the vss for the diff to work. Mera7, have you actually ever swapped the bell housing out? Either way they are worth it for the parts alone but I would like to know if you have actually done the case half swap yourself successfully.

katore, i used them for parts. i took the diffs out of them, the bearings, syncros, so on... i have only been told by others here on pff that you can change the bellhousing and use it with rodneys conversion parts.

Yeah I got a lot of that as well. either way, it is well worth the parts alone.

I have done this, did not need anything from Rodney but I had a complete stock trans to start with not just a bellhousing, details can be found at

https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum1/HTML/079525.html

In hindsight, I would not go with the 3.94 final drive AND gearsets from the Quad4, it's too much for the V6 in just about every gear except 5th (which I kept original ratio on). However, for a twin cam it would definately be good, any revving 4 cylinder should like it, and maybe even the 3.8SC (which I will eventually get around to installing, see me in a few years).

hey indiana... i agree the 3.94 final and quad 4 gearset is better matched for a dohc or high revving motor. using the stock fiero final and stock fiero gearset but using the quad 4 carrier and spider gears is a good combo and much stronger than the stock fiero carrier.
