So far in my life the Ferrari 355's engine sound is the best to this day, and I am actually thinking of buying one of those to hear the sounds when I drive.... My only question is, is the sound alive??? Meaning, does it rise and fall with the tach, so a 4500 rpm engine would be louder then 1500....
Thanx all,

lol my girlfriend got me a soundracer v8 and a soundracer v12 last christmas after I complained my new car was too quiet inside (I went from a dodge SRT-4 to a VW golf 2.5 liter). It's entertaining, to say the least. It was a hoot to install it on my buddy's SMART car.

I seen one on a car once. He had big powered speakers under the car. It sounded sorta OK, it sped up with the more gas he gave it. I dont know if its linked to the pedal , tach or what, to do that. Im guessing it has like a rheostat or potentiometer to the pedal or linkage. ie/ like a stereo volume control.

That's what I wanted to do as a joke with the '84 Fiero that I autocross. I thought it would be funny as hell to hear these awesome high-performance V8 sounds (lumpy idle, etc) coming from a 90 HP duke. However, I found out that these devices don't always work as advertised.
I tried a SoundRacer V8 in my Fiero and it wouldn't "read" the alternator correctly (see below). It produced the wrong RPM engine sounds for the revs that my engine was actually doing (ie, it was making sounds like the engine was doing 6000 RPM when I was just sitting there idling), so I returned it to the store.

No, there was no connection to anything other than plugging it into the cigarette lighter. In theory it's supposed to be able to monitor the revs of the engine from what the alternator is putting out, and then it adjusts the imitation engine sound which is broadcast to your car radio.
If anyone buys one of these things for fun, make sure you buy it from a place where you can take it back if it doesn't work with your particular vehicle.

Seriously, it should only be used on a Prius so that the elderly (those hard of hearing) and dear can hear you coming. Otherwise, replica owners should own them.

I once made a flight line recording of a jet engine starting up and doing a power test on a cassete. I had a pretty good stereo with an aftermarked equalizer in my car. I got some strange looks putting the tape in and cranking up the volume full blast with windows down. Especially cool in parking lots or red lights.

As Patrick stated, the SoundRacer V12 may be what you're looking for.
If you want to hear it outside of the car, and not just inside of the car; you'd need to hook up an amplifier and external speakers to your stereo system.
