Looks like a LOX storage ball. (Liquid Oxygen) although I am no NASA person.

I remember that day well - was up early and on TV they headed for a commercial break saying they'd be right back with live coverage of the shuttle landing. They came back from the commercial but hadn't yet gone to the live view from Florida. The guys in the studio said they were still awaiting the return of communication from the shuttle... then it was overdue... then a shot of the families being ushered away at the landing site and right afterward was reports of loud noises or explosions in the morning skies over Texas. And then of course the film of it disintigrating.

I had an appointment that afternoon to look at a Fiero. I bought it. Feb. 1, 2003.
