Such are the consequences of abortion on demand. Ironically, the "choice" movement for women has successfully wiped out 163 million of the women that it was meant to protect.

quote
Since the late 1970s, 163 million female babies have been aborted by parents seeking sons

It gets even better. How about aborting a child because it won't be born under the correct astrological sign?

quote

One Indian abortionist tells Ms. Hvistendahl: "I have patients who come and say 'I want to abort because if this baby is born it will be a Gemini, but I want a Libra.' "

That is "progress" for you.

Roe v. Wade is the law, cemented in by a supreme court ruling.

Progress is guranteed under the law. It may not be right, but its legal.

This is occurring in India, China, and some other Asian nations, not the US. The reasons for sex selection in Asia are well known, and have absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the culture in this country (and most non-Asian countries around the world, for that matter). This was posted with the implication that continuing to allow pregnancy termination in this country will somehow cause a massive gender imbalance in America, when in fact there is no evidence whatsoever that gender plays a role in pregnancy termination decisions in this country.

The story in question is a book review. The original book author is in favor of women retaining the right to terminate pregnancies, and the thrust of the book is about how asymmetrical gender ratios in the affected nations and societies is altering social dynamics. The book most assuredly does not examine the issue in the context of "progress", that is something that was interjected solely by this thread originator.

Like the author, I believe that a ban of pregnancy termination options is not the solution to the issues underlying gender imbalance problem. In fact, I feel that returning women to the status of essentially being reproductive slaves would be very counterproductive and likely would cause more harm than doing nothing at all.

The former policy of "One Family, One Child" has in many ways backfired in China, so much so that they have all but abandoned the concept.

In their attempt to impose population controls, they have inadvertently caused a woman's "sellers market" in that there are on average 3-4 eligible males to females. Some Provincial Chinese aborted female children in favor of males who were seen as being more capable of sustaining the family unit with the result that women there can afford to be extremely choosy about who they marry. This has driven a large number of eligible women from the provinces into the cities where the men are, by and large, more affluent or they choose to immigrate to countries where their chances of mating with something other than a farmer are better.....former Eastern Block countries, Western Europe, the US and the like.

The same thing will likely happen in India over time.

I would have thought that having an excess of males would increase the options for the females, therefor affording females a higher likelyhood of finding a mate of preference. That's counter to what was said in the post above. The real problem is that there is an excess of males of fighting age who have zero prospect of ever finding a mate; that creates all sorts of the wrong social dynamics.

Maybe I didn't express myself correctly. Your view is precisely what I was attempting to convey. Perhaps I need a good "online editor" to review my posts.
