Warning: The video below may cause you never to want to leave your house again. A School of Visual Arts thesis project by artist Ron Gabriel, named "3-Way Street," tracks a camera at the Manhattan intersection of 28th Street and Park Avenue. The New York mayhem known as street traffic ensues.

The video of traffic behaving badly has gone viral on the Web. No surprise: What you see is pretty hair-raising.

As the artist puts it on his website, the point of the study is to show the "interconnected role in improving the safety and usability of our streets." Mission very much accomplished.

With the master student's helpful graphics added to the clips, it's almost like watching the video game Frogger: Pedestrians dodge bikes, run into oncoming traffic, and barely escape with their lives. An 18-wheeler makes a tight U-turn. Cars jump lights. Pedestrians jaywalk. Bikes do everything but follow the rules of the road. Riding on the sidewalk? Check. Riding on the wrong side of the road? Check. Nearly colliding with people on foot? Check. Check. Check.

Aside from the arresting visuals, the stats from the artist are scary: This is just one intersection of 12,370 in the city. And 74 percent of the city's accidents that kill or seriously injure three to four people a day usually happen at an intersection, which causes collisions of bikes, cars, and people.

You can watch the video below. And please be careful out there.

A lot of those really aren't that dangerous. Sure, they come within 4 feet of a person or car... but that doesn't warrant an OMG.

Some of them are incredibly dangerous though.. it's scary really.

But I remember being on a bike and weaving in between anything, perfectly fine. The dangerous part comes in the unknown: What if that car take a turn at the last second? What if that person was just walking as a rest to her run and decides to start it back up? What if a mother stops to turn around and wait for her child? What if you hit a pothole?

Lots of unknowns. THOSE are what make these acts so scary.

Go home and put some ice on your goods - potholes hurt. A lot.

After one, you'll stop using the seat (or start paying more attention).

Lol I have hit one--I never used my seat though.

Instead, I flew over the bike and scraped myself up.

Yeah, I pay more attention

Pshhhh! You haven't seen what it is like in a city in a 3rd-world country.

Bicycles? Try motorbikes doing what the bicyclers were doing in the video that with little children sitting on the handlebars, then take away any traffic lights, and then multiply pedestrians, cars and motor bikes by a factor of 10.

The ones riding against traffic deserve to become hood ornaments. A-hole cyclists PIZZ me off to no end....they seem to think road rules dont apply to them, they can do whatever they want--and fault-liability is automatically the motorists responsibility when something happens. It actually happened to my brother. He was sitting STOPPED at a red light, a frackwad on a bicycle ran into his front fender and did a number on the fender, and hood of the GTA....my bro fought for 2 years, but it vehical/ bike crashes it is 100% car drivers fault 100% of the time......I say take every last cyclist out behind the barn and execute them......then burn the bodies just to make sure they are dead.

Funny thing is that is EXACTLY what driving is like in the financial district of San Francisco. I go through that every few days when in the city. The amount of cabs and bicycle couriers makes driving almost like a video game. The people in that environment are so used to it that it is normal.

Let me put it this way.........if it had been me behind the wheel of that T/A instead of my brother, my foot might have slipped off the clutch at the shock of being crashed into and my car damaged...ooopppsss, sorry about that. One less dickwad on a bike who thinks they are special....either way, as a driver if I have to take the liability for him being stupid...may as well make it worth it and make sure he aint around to do it again.
