I've fought the wheel / rim nomenclature battle before and had no success.
The slang has apparently taken over and perhaps someday that *part of the wheel* that was called the rim will have a new name, perhaps the "lip"
We can then look forward to new slang....
"Hey dude, them's a cool set of lips on that ride!"
Yeah, it sounds stupid, but so does "rims" to my ear. What do people that call wheels "rims" call the actual part of the wheel that *used to be* the rim ? Is it now, "the rim of the rim"?

NO NO NO. Whats next? A turbo being called a spiny sucky thing? Exhaust manifolds being called "Hot tubes?" The rim is a part of the wheel and why people started calling them rims is beyond me. Its just like people who slap a cone filter on a car and call it cold air intake.

Just to add to your discomfort level: You do know that the DISTRIBUTOR has garnered the slang term "Dizzy", right?

We could play the same game with "engine" and "motor." It may be a southernism, but I hear seemingly intelligent, educated people say, "what kind of motor is that," referring to the engine....

I had a set of slotted mags on my Fairlane. After the chrome reverse rims.
I call 'em wheels, but "rim" has been around since... the dawn of hot rodding?
I say "motor" and "engine" interchangeably. I've also never engineboated a pair of boobs.
Just to muddy the waters, they were aluminum wheels, weren't they? So, they should correctly be called "Alu's", no?
As for "Enginboating", what say we find a whole lot of them, and compare "Engineboating" and "Motorboating"? In the interest of linguistic science, of course.

Just for the record, if you decide to investigate "rimming", I'm NOT participating.
agggggg can we please stop this? Rim is slag/ghetto/hood for wheel....... the bigger your rims the more hood status you got and the more ho's you pull... there

I don't think there was ever any doubt about that....

Actually, from my era and location-the word "rim" referred to an after market wheel (Cragers, Supremes, Tru-Spokes, Zeniths, or Daytons). Commonly, somebody seeing that you got new wheels would say, "Hey, man you got some new rims or, "Man, you need some new rims." Another slang was, "Can you spot me four wheels to the crib"-which meant, "Can you give me a ride home in your car."
Technically, the word rim usually means the inner or outer lip or barrel.

I believe the actual word you're attempting to identify is "Poontang", and I think that word is actually a slang term for a Ford Mustang automobile.....

Well it *could* also be a delicious drink mix, made from the dehydrated fruit of the Poonberry tree, but I'm sticking with the first definition for now..
