A friend of mine locally has been offered one of these. I know there has been talk here about whether Corvette will ever become mid engine (engine behind driver). It seems they did make and sell them in the 80s. Apparently there were 7 of these made for GTP racing, and Rick Hendricks bought several. They had longitudinal turbo V6s/ FI V8s with Audi transaxles from what I understand. There are currently a few of them for sale right now. One in Florida is even street driven with license plates.
IIRC the Corvette Indy (concept car built in 1988 alongside the Pontiac Banshee) was a midengine offering. Could be wrong though and no time to look it up just now.

Iirc (i'll have to look it up) there was a mid engine 'Vette prototype, I saw a pic of a rear engine Vette, and in the early 70's Chevy experimented with a rotary powered Vette. The wankel powered car almost became a reality but the bass crunch of the 70's killed it as those motors had terrible mileage.

Sorry, but that car is as much a Corvette as Jeff Gordon's car is an Impala.
While thats totally true, it was sold and raced as a Corvette, so technically it is one. Its not a prototype or factory concept. Although extremely limited, it was a production car that was sold to anyone who wanted to buy it.
