Its not the end of the world. As other have posted, just change it.
I have done about 5 in my life. And I can tell you the hardest hands down was a Apple Powerbook G4. But if I can change them, anyone can. I have found that most laptop have a step by step guide to replacement of the screens somewhere on the internet.

Changing out a screen is a lot easier than replacing the backlight bulb. For some reason 3 out of 4 Thinkpad A3x laptops I've had all came with a broken backlight.
I replace, on average, 1-3 laptop screens a week where I work and it's to the point that unless it's a Mac, I can almost swap them out in my sleep. I would be careful as a lot of manufacturers have up to 3 different screens for each model of laptop based on trim level, and you may have to pull the screen out and order the replacement off of part number to ensure you get the proper screen.

The toughbook suffered a dead touchscreen. And being that the toughbook is nearly waterproof everything is sealed. So replacing the screen involved breaking the old one. Its was funny because my toughbook is nearly mint and has zero wear yet the touchscreen died. But hey I got a new screen panel for free as it was under warranty.

The backlights don't seem to last long anymore. I have an old NEC with Windows 98 and the backlight is still good. Also have a Compaq with Vista that was just out of warranty when the backlight failed.

I have an old Dell Inspiron 1500whatever from 2004.. and it took a tumble off the table during an argument with my wife. Instead of just picking it up, I was so pissed, I picked it up and punched it and destroyed the screen, while screaming "Does it look like I give a **** ??!!!!" I proved that, at the time, I didnt. Ahh.. good times.
It looks like someone shot it as well.
The rest of the laptop works just fine, it just needs a new top/screen. Thanks for posting some solutions... I will be fixing it up relatively soon so she can have a "new" work PC to run her film editing sotware on. I would have never even thought to look for a repair solution until I read this thread. Good stuff.

With that being a new system, and not just in the terms of purchase date, that screen may set you back considerably more than any of us has suggested. According to what I've been reading, it was only released at the end of January...
