What is it? A small muscle in your back (google it)

What is it? It is engaged every time you initiate a step forward.
It is engaged when you begin to get up from a sitting or lying down position.
It is engaged when you twist your torso. It is engaged when you compensate for movement (car, bus, etc)

What happenes when you 'pull it'?

1 day of agony on the floor/bed

1 day of 'minimal movement' (go to/ from bathroom)
1 day of walking like a 95 year old.
1 day of walking like an 85 year old
1 day of soreness.
Then recovery.

I'm currently on the 'walk like an 85 year old' day.

Man, did it suck royally when I pulled it over the weekend.

I pulled it once about 5 years ago, (which is why I know the drill)
I hope none of you EVER pull this muscle.

EVER.

I pulled mine a couple of weeks ago. Thank God my Doctor was able to call in a prescription for muscle relaxants for me. They certainly helped me get back on my feet a lot more quickly than without them. I've been doing some rowing to help strengthen my back muscles.

I had ONE 'pill' of that nature, it helped get me through the first few hours...

Hurts, doesn't it?

Work has been fun so far this week...

You don't realize how much you use that muscle until you hurt it. Getting up, leaning over, brushing your teeth, putting on your pants, all become tasks because of the pain. Standing up and walking is a feat itself.

EXACTLY, man... It's such a subtle muscle.
I first had it act up after a car accident. Dang thing kept firing when it wasn't supposed to. Accupuncture+electric shocks applied to the needles did the trick.

This time around, they stuck a flaming bowl 'o suction on my back, it worked for a few hours...

That must be the one I keep pulling over & over. Started having constant trouble with it when I got to a certain weight. I'll sure be glad when I get below that weight, whatever it is, if I ever do.

I've had lower back problems for 30 some years. I finally ended up buying a TENS unit. They used them on me during physical therapy, and they made my back feel SO good. I bought one that's about the size of an old pocket transistor radio. Doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the table top units, but it's good enough for me. Alternating heat and ice, along with the TENS machine, and I'm usually able to "function" after a day or two....takes more than a week to really heal up, though.

I hope you feel better soon brother. I pulled something like that a few years ago. It hurt so bad. There were several moments of shooting pain where I could not breathe.

Is that the electronic stimulation thing? A chiropractor used that on me a long time ago over a 6-week period, and it felt SO good!

Yeah, I <3 the TENS, the way I would get it: first, the Doc would stick needles into the two ends of that muscle, then he'd hook the ends of the needle to the TENS. I'd feel all 'floaty', during the treatment, and felt pretty good right after it's over. The needles deliver the shock directly to the muscle, I believe it's insulated except for the two ends...

That muscle is a pain because it normally acts to prevent injury to your spine, and if it isn't working properly, it opens you to worse injury...

I hate that 'electric shock/stop breathing" pain. That's NO JOKE.

Feels better today, I'm no longer walking like Ed Grimly.

I had a slipped disc/back surgery about 5 1/2 years ago. (Lowest disc before the tailbone.) Worst pain I've ever had in my life.

Ironic. I pulled my muscle this weekend too. Several times in the shower, and once while watching late night TV. Strange, but when I pull my muscle, I like it.

I think I strained my multifidus muscle a few months ago. Man, that was uncomfortable.

Those can actually make things worse (depending on what's 'wrong' with ya) By providing support, they allow some back muscles to atrophy!

What I need is one 45 bullet (just one)

Well, went and got X-rays. No issues w/ the bones or discs. (That's a relief)

So I just need to strengthen my core...
