I'm a bit angry right now, never let anybody use your car for anything...ever!

I usually don't drive my '04 Saturn Ion (2.2 ecotec) except for commuting, and since I'm jobless, it sits. My sister's car was not running and she asked to borrow mine. I told her fine, but to change the oil because it needed it, or at the least keep an eye on it and add some if it needed. She decided to do neither I got the car back yesterday and when driving it home I noticed a knock, then the SES light came on. Got to my parent's house since it was closer than home and checked the oil....bone dry I left it there.

Today I went over and put some oil in it and started it up, still knocking and still SES. Knock is coming from the top of the motor from what I can tell and it otherwise runs fine. Is this motor fried? I really do not have the money right now to take it to a mechanic for major work so again, I'm really pissed about the whole situation. Please don't tell me about how she should pay for it because she has less money than me and that would never happen.

I guess this turned into a question/rant, sorry.

can you read the code (drive it to an Autozone or a place like that). How low was the oil? How much did you put in to top it off?

Nearest place with a free reader is a bit farther than I feel comfortable driving it right now.

Oil was not showing on the dipstick, and about 2.75 quarts got it to the "max" side of the operating range.
