Currently vehicles that feature "head-up display" technology generally display important information like vehicle speed, navigation directions, etc. on small part of the windshield, but GM's new system is going to go even further.

GM is currently working on a new system that would use data collected from vehicle sensors and cameras to project images generated by compact ultra violet lasers directly onto the entire windshield.

"We're looking to create enhanced vision systems," says Thomas Seder, group lab manager-GM R&D. His team is working with Carnegie Mellon University and The University of Southern California, as well as other institutions, to create a full windshield head-up system leveraging night vision, navigation and camera-based sensor technologies to improve driver visibility and object detection ability.

"Let's say you're driving in fog, we could use the vehicle's infrared cameras to identify where the edge of the road is and the lasers could 'paint' the edge of the road onto the windshield so the driver knows where the edge of the road is," Seder said.

The system would help alert drivers of objects that may exist in the road or beyond their normal vision.

I think it'd be just peachy to have a video-game style HUD displayed on my windshiedl in full-colour, with a speedo, tach, perhaps a timer, although that might be asking for trouble depending on the vehicle it's in.

That would be sweet if it gave you an audible voice alert and highlighted speed traps down the road with a flashing red and blue square. AWESOME.

I say that the closer real life gets to video games, the better.

Which would enable them to travel through the mist at speed, along with those of us that don't have such unique abilities. I'm thinking that unless all vehcles are equipped in this way, this might not work out to well. Heck, even if everyone had it, you know someone is going to push it to the edge of the envelope. Yep, I can see this making for some really intense experiences and some spectacular news reports.

For some people, that point has already been passed---their real life is entirely consumed and completely obscured by what is not real.

Yes there are some people who reject reality but I was just referring to HUDs and other technology that is portrayed in games.

Its still Government Motors, and I'll not be buying another one until Obama sells the government share of GM which I am sure is not going to happen.

When its time for another car, it will be a Ford.

This is awesome, however I can just see it filling people with too much confidence, and out pacing their headlights or the fog. It might be fine and dandy, right up to the point when it reads the road wrong or misses the deer. It would be great as am extra safety tool but like so many other things, we may become to reliant on it. For example: people are found to drive more recklessly when wearing a seat belt. Almost everyone uses their cell phones while driving, and people try to program GPS while on the move. I would love to have it, but I would hate for a couple people I know to have it.

Its a shot at the money that can be spent on this type of device but they cant fund a cure\treatment for illnesses that are killing our loved ones.
My uncle spent the last six years of his life in a husk, unable to do more than walk to his couch and watch TV. This was my view of hell. There could be a cure but there isn't any money for it because we would rather pay for gadgets and hug trees than spend money on research.

It doesn't hit home until it effects you personally. I guess I should have used a in my first post?

It is not an all or nothing deal. There are a number of converging technologies that have helped cancer treatment dramatically. Some examples:

Robotics gives us robotic surgery that is significantly less invasive and more precise than traditional surgery leading to quicker recovery and more precise removal of tumors. It would not even be possible if money was not "wasted" on something other than cancer research.

Computers made possible the human genome project. Now there is a cancer genome project which is the equivolent of the human genome project times 200. It would not even be possible if money was not "wasted" on something other than cancer research.

Nuclear physics gave spawn to radiotheropy, x-rays and MRIs.

Automotive and aerospace technology allows us to get to the hospital in time to save lives.

Agricultural technology gives us a huge variety of foods and mades our food more nourishing which helps to prevent cancer.

Nano technology is in its infancy now but it has great potential to cure cancer in itself.

Just what we need ... more visual distraction! It's not a bad idea from a technical standpoint, but once the marketing types get involved it's all over. Just think of the possibilities. Think of pop-up ads superimposed on your view of the road. Think of trivial text messages displayed across your windshield. Think of being able to play video games on your windshield while driving. Think of stock market quotes being displayed in real time. Read your morning newspaper while driving.

That's the one I'm waiting for.. not because I hate to drive, quite the opposite, I love to drive, but there are people I know that I don't want behind the wheel, yet they are there every day to and from work....

Driver's will be so busy looking AT the windshield, they won't be looking at what's happening THROUGH the windshield.

Didnt Cadillac and Mercedes already have a system to 'see' thru fog and dark 10 years ago....? I seem to recall seeing commercials showing them driving on a dark country road and it showed a deer in the road they couldnt see just looking thru the windshield.

Ya, Mercedes and I believe Lexus now both have a thermal camera mounted on the front, but it shows up on a screen, not sctivly on the windsheild like this, all the technology they are using is fairly old, just the way that they are applying it is new.

DRIVE to work? What an outdated concept.

More people should work from home. Less cars on the road= less greenhouse gas. Those 'work-at-home" folks can then see all the super-enhanced HUD windshields they want... on their X-Boxes...
