I recently discovered Tawny Port. It has become my favorite dinner wine.
If I may make a recommendation, Cockburn 20 Year Old Tawny Port. It is the best Port I have ever had. You'll have to go to a wine shop to find it, but it's worth the trip. It's simply outstanding.
Try it with a chocolate desert. You'll need a cigarette afterwards.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll look for it. I didn't realize this survey was directed towards a restaurant or I wouldn't have chimed in. Right now I have only purchased the Taylor Wine tawny port. On sale it goes for about 12.00 for a 3 liter jug. I'll wager it's not 20 years old. And I get your reference.

Well, the Cockburn 20 Year is going to be closer to $55 for a 750ml bottle. But it's worth it. Another good port in the $10-$20 range is Sandeman's. Cockburn also makes a 10 Year Old Tawny Port, and while it's good, it's nowhere near the same level as the 20 Year.

Do NOT bring politics into a non-political thread - even as a joke.
As for some good wines, I tend to prefer red wines, but the selection is so varied it would be hard to make a top 10 list. A few of my favorites, though are:
1. Cockburn 20 Year Old Tawny Port. (The best wine I've ever had, IMO) 2. Robert Mondavi - various labels and varietals. All are good for their price range. Woodbridge is a great low cost wine. 3. Ravenswood. Their "Vintner's Blend Zinfindel" is a fantastic bargain at under $10. Their other offerings are all good. 3. Bouchane Pinot Noir. A bit more expensive, but very nice. 4. 7 Deadly Zins. 5. Caymus Conundrum. 6. Madonna Estates. Fantastic wine from an organic winery. Not available through distributors - you must buy directly from the winery. 7. Iron Horse Merlot. 8. Chalk Hill Chardonnay. One of the few whites I actually like. 9. Chateau St. Michelle. Just about anything they make is good.
Wines are kind of like microbrews. There's so many different types and they all have subtle differences. The Ravenswood and Mondavi are my standard drinking fare, with the others when I want something a little fancier. The Cockburn is in a league all it's own.

1. Robert Mondavi Merlot and Pinot Noir. 2. Woodbridge is close. 3. Liebfraumilch (usually Leonard Kreusch) 4. Riesling (various)
Just about anything from the Pacific coast. We were in Oregon a few years back, and had a wonderful time, sampling some of the local labels. I also am a bit partial to German white wines (as above.)
And bringing up the rear... Charles Shaw (aka Two Buck Chuck) Merlot and Chardonnay. Sold exclusively at Trader Joe's. (They have other types as well, but we have gravitated to these.) It's $2.00 per bottle (varies by location) and is not bad at all. I've heard that it's all natural, but I'm not sure if that's true or not. I know that I can drink excessive amounts of it and not get nearly as hungover as I would with something else.
Everytime I go on vacation, I try to visit a local winery. So any of my favorites would be unknown. I buy 2 bottles. 1 to show and 1 to go. Meaning I drink 1 and save the other as a momento of the vacation. I like sweet wines. That does not necesarily mean cheap. I really like wines made from Muscadines, which is sort of a grape on steroids. One brand I get here is Duplin. It is from a North Carolina winery and is made from muscadines. Their "Hatteras red" is my favorite flavor.
I know this isn't the question that was asked, but I'll add my two cents anyway. There are very few red wines, and virtually not a single white, that will stand up to barbecue. A California zinfandel (red, not white) is just about the only thing that comes to mind.
Wine drinkers really don't usually drink their wine with barbecue. Concentrate on your beer selection instead.

Aren't you going to tell us the name of the vineyard? Duplin Vineyards would probably like the publicity.
I thought I did when I mentioned the brand was Duplin and they were located in North Carolina. Another one I like is from Rebec vineyards in Amherst Virginia, near the Natural Bridge. They have a sweet wine called Autumn Glow. That one is made from grapes. Every October they sponser a Garlic and Wine festival. Fun times. Everyone is drunk as a skunk and they have bad breath.

GSXRBOBBY, my apologies. I did not mean to disparage your thread. 'Tis a sad day when we have to worry about being so politically correct that we can not use joking sarcasm for fear of offending those who have thin skin. I asked for no political opinion, I gave none. I made an observation. Which, maybe, fit well in the thread topic. Maybe I am different. I check nor uncheck any topic choice. I know how to ignore. I don't even need the back button.

My favorite are all from Germany (one you can get as a Canadian but I find the German version sweeter)
1. Troken-Beren Auslese very sweet and amber in color (close to honey color) very expensive we paid 125 for a half bottle 2. Icewein- again sweet but not as sweet as the Troken-White (can be found as a Canadian wine and actually very good) 3. Auslese- Sweet but not overpowering-white
Those are my favorites and I drink them as a desert but the first two should be enjoyed with a slightly bitter dessert such as dark chocolate mousse or tart desserts to offset thier sweetness. Just my two cents.

This by no means is my opinion of Formula88. I do believe he was counciling me on the forum umm, .... thin skins. I have seen the recent threads griping but, I do not understand. Does every song on the public radio play what you want to hear ?
nothing beats a good German Riesling ice wine mmmmmmmmm
especialy when you go to Germany to see your family that lives near the Rhine river and they have a special dinner and give you wine their neighboors made.... ah that was a great night.
