As most of you know, I rode out hurricane Ike at home here in Cleveland Texas, about 115 highway miles north east of where Ike made landfall, around midnight on a Friday night. All that night, and untill about 4 am saturday, things weren't too bad here. .
Sunset Fri evening-deceptively beautiful and calm.
We did not even lose power until 1:18am Sat morning--while I was right in the middle of a post here at PFF. It was only after the eye passed, and the winds behind the eye began to come out of the east and south that we experienced problems. The wind blew HARD here, from 4am till about 3pm that Saturday. I ventured out, about 8am that morning, to see what was happening--and what had happened. Here is what I found:
About 1 mile from my residence, after navigating around many fallen TV cable and Phone lines on the road.
A local business, that had just been completely redone-roof and sides torn off.
The 2 Indys were safe and sound elsewhere. Did not have a place to stash my daily driver 84. The only damage, was that the passenger side mirror glass was blown from it's mount on the movable housing/ Found it on the asphalt down the parking lot about 100' away--unbroken.
The following are on my property about 8 miles out of town--I wasn't able to get out there till late Sat evening.
Just inside my main gate--powerline felled by dead pine tree that was actually outside my front fence--on hiway right of way. Stright back, are 2 more trees down, tho hard to see here.
The old farmhouse that is on the front of our property. Undamaged really. The small tree isn't really resting on the roof, but on a line you can't see in this pic. To the extreme rear of this pic, is a large hickory tree that blew down (broke off 2' from ground) and fell across the main power line coming in to the property. You can't tell it because it blends in with the background.
I'm standing in front of the downed hickory tree. Yes, I had just got done 'zipping up' from relieving myself when Jane snapped the pic.

Ya know, I just love Jane to death and I've never met her!!
Glad you two made out okay. Sorry you had to go through it all though.
Good luck getting things back in shape, wish I could do something to help you out.....if you were closer I'd make you homemade bisquits and bring them over, but I'm just to far away!!

The FFA has it's work cut out with it's adopt-a-highway cleanup:
If I may detour your thread for a moment...
I wanted to adopt the road behind my house, so I could get my Just Say Go LLC name on the sign, BUT -
First, the phone number on the signs gave a recording saying that it is disconnected Next, I did a search and found their website, verified the phone number, and filled out the Contact Us form There was never any response from submitting the Contact Us form, so... I called another number from the website and was told they would be happy to have me adopt the road, but due to budget cuts they will not add my LLC name to the sign
I will still gladly keep the road behind my house cleaned up, but I certainly won't commit to anything if they won't put the name on the sign. Sheesh.
Ya know, I just love Jane to death and I've never met her!!

I love you too ! I'd let Don eat your biscuits if you lived closer. Just so he would leave me alone about it. My sister-in-law taught me how to make the d@mn things when we went to Arkansaw, so I guess I'll make them occasionally for him now that she's spoiled him for me.. LOL. We don't have a lot to get back in shape thank goodness. We're resting today from our travels. We decided to go see my parents for a few days too. They live in Paris,Texas. We drove over 1000 miles last week. They even had trees down in Arkansa. We didn't find gas or ice for 142 miles. We finally found some in Jacksonville,Texas. Cheever, budgets are going to get much worse for a while. Sorry.
Jane

You do know about airmail right? I would say they need a few bisquits.

This is the hickory tree that fell on my powerline and chainlink fence. I started sawing on it today.
Forgot to add this one too. 88 notchie. Doesn't run--a close call with a pine tree-actually just the upper part of a pine tree. Just have too many Fieros to keep them all safe. Yep, dats the ass end of my dawg.

Paradise? What's a high property tax rate added to a state income tax buy you? We only have one of those, and our lives don't suck.
At least (unlike earthquakes) we can see 'em coming. Prior warning counts for a lot --- damage could have been much worse, but we secure what we can, in advance.
OK, we have love bug seasons, and four inch long mosquitoes. (The rumors are not true, no team of less than five has ever physically carried off a Volkswagen)(yet). So the humidity can be a royal PITA, at least in SE Texas. The heat can be oppressive, and West Texas dry until you die. We have copperheads and scorpions. Coral snakes are few, but one's enough. Oh, and cockroaches big enough to star in MIB III. Whoops, left out rattlesnakes and wild pigs, the occasional rabid bat, and 'dillos, raccoons, rabbits, and deer.
We have all these things. Mostly, we coexist. Our weather may not be idyllic, but we have our moments. We are not soft people, we Texans, and our ideals of Paradise may not be yours. But we have our moments.
I spent three years in exile, in California. I don't begrudge you your view of "paradise." But I do not share it. We have lower taxes, much better barbeque, much better Mexican and South American food, and Blue Bell ice cream. So you can have "Paradise." You still have hazards. For me, the benefits, and the quality of life, is better here.

FAA= nothing no anything to it anymore, changed back a long time ago used to mean future farmers of america, but when they realized that there were people who wanted to join, not just because of farming but the leadership skills and experiance that can be gained in the program. there was a offical ruling that said that FFA, means FFA nohting more.
i was in FFA in high school, i graduated in 06, i don't remember the year they changed that, so it may not be real long time. im too lazy to look it up.
ok now that ive informed you, glad to see everyone is ok and not harmed. looks like some pretty good tree damage occured, and the winds seem to have taken there toll.
I am glad there's not too much to clean up Don and Jane!!
As for the biscuits (yes Blake, Mr spellcheck guy, way to make me feel bad It's not how you spell it, it's how you make them!!) I'm sure Don would much rather eat yours than mine!!! Although, I'm sure both of ours are nice and moist, with lots of folds to keep any guy satisfied!!! LOL Did I just type that out loud???
