Yes, the plane flew.

Really?!?!? But...but...but...everyone told me it wouldn't. Physics told me it would. Which should I believe? I'm so confused.

If the turntable could keep up with the rotor speed, just in the opposite direction ,then no it will not fly. Also the pilots might get sick from the spinning. Now if there was a CH-47 chinook on there it would be quite an interesting launch!

Maybe the idea is to spin the helicopter fast enough without the engine running to see if liftoff occurs?

The real question will then be - Clockwise or Counterclockwise?

to spin that thing as fast as the prop. in the same/opposite direction as the propeller I doubt it would even stay on the turn table, and again, it will fly anyway lol

Not this again.... although it would be interesting watching mythbusters test this... lol

Rotors, my friend, rotors. Propellers are on airplanes, boats and who know what else but on a helicopter it's a rotor system with rotor blades.

I predict that fuel sloshing away from the pickups will be a problem ... especially at 78 rpm ... regardless of whether it's a single-rotor or twin-rotor design. I would like to see a Chinook on a turntable, though, but only from a safe distance.

Even if the engine's turning you're going to run into blade stall issues. I still say there are conditions where it will fly.

It would be a physics nightmare to spin a real helicopter in the opposite direction of the rotor that fast...not the least of which you will be fighting the tailrotor...but if you could then the helicopter would not take off.

The reason this is different than the plane is that the conveyor belt does not have any real effect on the plane except to spin the wheels backwards. This turntable is the equivalent to hooking a bungee cord directly to the frame of the plane and pulling it backwards. Then the plane would not take off.

An equivalent and more interesting test would be to put a fan underneath the helicopter blowing air in the same direction as the rotors, creating zero wind speed across the rotors. Would it take off then? Sort of like an airplane flying at 150 mph flies into a hurricane with a 150 mph tailwind...does it fall out of the sky?
