Lost about 1.5 inches of flesh, sinew and vein from my middle finger, left hand. And a fair amount of blood . Fortunately Ellie was home, and drove me to the hospital.)9 stitches, nerve re-joined, flesh and skin re-attached sinew stapled ..good as gold!! The Spanish medical system is excellent..treated by a VERY pleasant German doctor, who insisted on speaking English!! So...my chance to get some work done on the Fiero has to take a step back..not allowed to do anything for 5 days...yeah RIGHT!! I'd go stir crazy!! How did it happen? Well...my garage has three doors. One single hinged on the right, and the other side is two doors hinged together, and to the wall. I was cleaning everything out in my workshop, and Ellie was helping. She went up to make dinner, and I started to clean up. Had my hand against the edge of the middle ,door where it is hinged to the other one. No wind ALL DAY!!. Turned around to push the bolt on the door into the floor...wind blew for the ONE and ONLY time today...and nearly took my middle finger off.Nice claret fountain..so I grabbed my fingers, squeezed them together, and pushed the tip of my other index finger against the base of the bleeding one.Walked upstairs, opened the door, and politely asked Ellie to take me to hospital ..She nearly fainted when she saw the mess, but I stayed SOOO calm, she managed to hold it all together. 20 minute wait after checking in to ER..stitched up, repaired and on my way home after 50 minutes. Will take a piccy of the bandage, and when I have to change the bandage tomorrow, I will take a piccy of the wound!! Yeah!! Nick

Photos up in first post Darlene..it was a play on the old joke about 'please read this with your eyes closed, because I am writing this in the nude!' Yes Pokey, it has started to thump, throb, and ache!!...and no, I havenīt sought refuge or solace in a cigarette or ten!! Hahaha!! Nick Oh yes I WILL, Ron!! I'm not allowed to bend the finger (even if I could ) for 8 days..then I will be working on getting it supple again..through the pain barrier!!

You sure it was one gust of wind and not your wife pushing on that door to close it? I thought sure I read here that she wanted you to spend less time on the internet. Guess it didn't work...
Get well soon!

Nick, you have to be more careful with your hands, they are your livelyhood and it would be very detrimental to loose the use of them. At least it sounds like it wasn't too serious. Take your time recovering and relax for a few days.

LOL Nick thats your traffic finger, now what are you going to do, my GOD.
Melanie was sitting here as I was reading this and the 2 of us were just roaring.
Sorry really I know its not funny in the least, but the way you started the thread with the title just got us. And then to be so nonchalant about what happened got the both of us rolling in the isles, so to speak.
Are you sure you are telling us the whole story? I mean it is your traffic finger. Did you maybe give Ellie the finger and she bit it off.
Seriously though.
Is this going to permanently make this finger useless? Not knowing what hand you use to play the guitar with as far as fingering, (no pun intended) the neck of the guitar.
Hope they gave you some good pain killers for when the drugs from the hospital wears off.
Stop giving Ellie the finger.
Steve & Melanie

Well, at least it wasn't caused by that newish bending-brake you got last year. My sympathy and hope you have a reasonable recovery.
I can't remember Elvis tunes based around a slide guitar?
A few years ago my idiot brother caught his finger in a car door. The ironic part was that the door was locked, and the keys were left in the ignition switch. He didn't need stitches, his ego was hurt more than anything else, but he has a pretty fup-duck fingernail on that finger.

Wow, those Ibuprofeno Alter pack a punch!! 600 mg of pure sleepy-byes!! Thank God!! Pretty painful...especially when you turn over in your sleep, and put your full weight on the wound I had to remove the bandage, because it started to throb...and that means infection...and that is what I have got . So, it is back to hopital this afternoon..wish me luck, guys!! I've used all mine up for now..if the bone had gone, the whole finger would have too Nick

No, the new bender/guillotine is nowhere near as dangerous!! At least I EXPECT trouble from that.. and so I am careful, as I am with all my tools. Just have to add doors to the list now!!! Nick

Wow Nick! Don't know how I missed this thread. Sorry about your accident. Hope it heals well and you kick any infection in the ar$e. I had a slight problem about 11 years ago. My foot got into an argument with a lawn mower. The mower won. Result? Only eight toes now
Good luck friend!

I feel for ya, that's got to suck. Of all the stuff us fiero mechanics do that's potentially dangerous, you nearly get your finger taken off by a door -- that wasn't even broken!
Changed the dressing twice yesterday, but this morning 5:00am I woke up with the throbbing all the way up to my elbow..and it feels 'hot'. Took the dressing off, and the infection has become rather nasty in the last 12 hours. So..got to take Ellie to the airport today, Zwerver to the Vet tomorrow, and me to the ER asap.WHY? WHY does this kind of thing happen when you are least prepared/have the least time for it? It HAS to be a priority..I donīt want to lose my finger/hand/arm/life ..but it could have been a bit more considerate in choosing a time to happen Nick

Nick are you putting a disinfectant salve on when you change the dressing? You should be.
Did the doctor leave a drain in? With a cut that bad I would think they would have. But then I am not a doctor. But over the years I have had my share of cuts.
You need to take care of that, ASAP.

Yea Nick, do not put it off. Go tot he ER as soon as your drop Ellie off and get that cleaned up. If it is feeing hot then it definitely needs some attention! And NOW!

OUCH, that looks dandy. Speedy recovery man. I almost had most of the weight of an 03 Grand Prix sit on mu middel finger knuckle one time, this reminds me. I was totally caught and jacked the car up with my other hand to get it off. I was actually lowering the jack and stopped as it applied just enough pressure to my knuckle to hurt, luckily. Garages can be dangerous.

Damn, Nick! That hurts to look at. I hope it heals well, and heals quickly.
Don't take any chances. I would ask the doctors about that "totally dry" comment. Seems to me that some sort of antibiotic cream is in order. Or maybe iodine or mercurochrome. Sets my teeth on edge to think about It, but DON'T let it get infected.
[This message has been edited by Raydar (edited 01-10-2008).]
Yep Raydar!! If I was as smart as it felt just after it happened, I'd be a millionaire now!! The Medic said I am healing very well, and very quickly They packed it full of iodine before they started to stitch it up, and left both ends of the wound open for drainage.Always did seem to recover from things like this pretty quickly. The pain was probably caused by my having slept on it last night!! I am keeping the whole finger moving all the time. I donīt want it to lock up, and take me weeks to get it supple enough to play guitar Jake, I would LOVE to soak it in cider...but Ellie is in Holland!! Now...where is Zwerver...hmmm... TMI!! Hahahaha!! Nick

i cut a little bit of my finger off when i fell off my bike a cupple years ago, got lots of morphine and vicodin and about 5 am i felt the nice throbing of pain.
my cousin is missing most of his middle finger, he likes to pull up next to little kids and put the stub up to his nose like hes picking it with his hole finger.
Improving rapidly!! No infection at all now. The wound is dry, and pain free.I can bend the finger reasonably well, considering it has only been 4 days!! Wish I could clean it up all around the damage, but I mustnīt get it wet, so...dirty it stays!! Nick
