Hard drives run HOT , especially SATA Drives and high RPM ones... I have used all sorts of hard drive coolers, with heat sinks and fans (some coolers actually end up making the drive hotter!) and I REALLY REALLY REALLY recommend this one. After putting this one on my "Boil an egg on me, please" Drive, even after ten+ hours of use, the drive is COOL TO THE TOUCH! (I believe it was something ridiculus like +3 ambient after ten hours) I was really amazed at how well this thing cooled (I have tried similiar products (aluiminum cover with 1 or 2 fans) and they really didn't do much for heat dissipation/reduction/etc)

This one is pretty darn good, though!

It's design is simple, and it's also cheap. I don't know how long the fan will work, but it's fairly quiet and doesn't seem to get hot, so it should last awhile...

Thermaltake Hard Drive Cooler ---> 9.99

I know what you are talking about. HD heat kills
I've had alum boxes, with fans on either the front or back, and they worked pretty dang good too.

are these just alum plates, the size of a 3.5" HD with a fan in the middle? mounts in standard 3.5" bay? looks like it moves a good amount of air.

I generally avoid Thermaltake products. Fortunatly there are a billion chinese companies out there that make something identical to that.

But I do have to question the wisdom of using them. Google has a gigantic number of servers, and they all have a bunch of hard drives. They monitor them all with the drive's S.M.A.R.T system. Awhile back they published the results of monitoring all their drives, which stated that the drives which were kept close to room temp were actually more failure prone than those which were allowed to run hot.

Haven't seen that, I'll need to "google it" ...

Warm is ok, but dang some of these drives get REALLLLY HOT...

This one moves a decent volume of air, and is pretty quiet.
