and the floor director told you all to stand up, clap and cheer when she walked in...would you?? (assuming you would even CONSIDER going !!)..I think applause should be earned, not on tap Nick

An expectation of the producer for allowing the audience all of those free tickets, you're supposed to support the effort. If you don't like the host, I wouldn't advise going. There are seveal shows that I would not consider going to, those that I would go to, I'd probably enjoy the show enough to applaude. Even if it was on cue.

ALL live studio shows do this. In fact - they will also tell audiance members of certain things they CANT say/yell during the show, depending on the guests & subjects.
They also have actors in the audience, that will cry/smile/ do whatever when they need that "special shot".
I didn't know that. I see how that's true though. When those shows do those close up shots of people, they never take shots at some goofy looking, poorly groomed person.

Damn, I wish I knew what the heck that was, I might enjoy it. Must be some NE US custom.
kvetch n 1: (Yiddish) a constant complainer 2: (Yiddish) a nagging complaint v : express complaints, discontent, displeasure, or unhappiness; "My mother complains all day"; "She has a lot to kick about" [syn: {complain}, {kick}, {plain}, {sound off}, {quetch}] [ant: {cheer}]
Anyway, I did some summer work in Branson taping Christmas shows a long time ago. There certainly are actors in the audience, and everyone is expected to clap/cheer in unison. People who did otherwise (booing etc.) were replaced quickly.
None of these are live shows, and they have allot of time to tape them, if they feel they need another audience reaction they will have people clap or cheer until they feel its right.
Oh, and Ray Stevens, hate him after that taping. Rudest @$$clown I have ever met.
I was just trying to see how many people were prepared to sit through all that fake crap, and do as they were told!! And to prove to myself that those people who DO go to Shows like that, are just hoping to get their face on Telly, even if only for a split second..Andy Warhol's theory seems to be more and more true every day I just happened to catch the start of the programme, and it was so blatantly obvious that somebody was telling them what to do (in the audience).More Media manipulation.Makes it more unbelievable, to me, than if they relied on 'normal 'audiences, and 'normal' reaction. I think it was the Tonite Show that used to go out and have drinks that tasted awful, Spam and Tang (Spang) in a blender sounds like one of them. As long as the camera was on them people would rave about how great the drink was. As soon as they thought the camera wasn't looking, aaakkkkk.

Oh... it is a NE custom in a way, I grew up with that tradition in NY.
Ok, here is a neat tip... just been playing with Firefox add ons, and here is a neat one. Check out Answers 2.2.22, you put the cursor over anything and hold the alt key while hitting right click and it opens a little window explaining whatever you pointed at... for instance kvetch is yiddish or high german for to complain persistently and whiningly. It gives more info as to origins etc...
Someone in another thread suggested a few addons and I found that one and am trying it out... pretty neat. I also really like the colorful tabs one (makes it easier to see that you have multiple tabs open and tell the difference. Tab effect is useless but cool looking also.
So stop your kvetching and go get firefox and addons if you don't have them
