Hi,

I have a Buffalo Tools GEN4065 4000 Watt 6.5 Horsepower Portable Generator which was bought new last summer. There may be about 4 hours use on it. Last time I went to start it (about a month ago), it ran a bit rough, almost like the unload was messing up, reving erradicatly,etc.. I tested it by plugging in a few tools and it revved up more when I started them so its working.. Gas is about 3 months old.

Any tuneup suggestions? would gas stabilizer or any gas treatment harm the engine?

I imagine the carb is a bit gummed up from sitting.

It has a 6.5 Honda motor.

Thanks Jason

the motor is just like any lawnmower motor. yes, gas stabilizer will help. but - a better way to go, is to add fresh fuel when using it.
since theres barely any time on it, I'd expect the filters are fine (fuel & air)
clean the plug
spray down the carb with carb cleaner
run some fuel system cleaner thru the fuel

basicly - anything you'd do with a lawnmower, when its running bad

oh yeah - back on the fuel - 10% ethenol fuels dont have a very long shelf life - they suck even after a month

Thanks

Its about 1/2 full now, so I will fill it and throw in a can of fuel stabilzer. I did check the air filter last night, it looked brand new with just a few peices of sawdust on the outside of it (used for construction)

I pull my generator out every few months and let it run a while. I dont keep much gas in it and what is in has StaBil. Mines about 3 years old, not really used yet. Usually takes about 10 pulls to get it fired up. After that it starts on first pull.

Mine has always needed 1/2 choke to start, 99% of the time even when warm..

I picked up a bottle of the Marvel Mystery Oil. Would that work for this? (wanted to dump some in the car, van and truck)

Marvel is a top cylinder additive, like for rings, valve guides. Id guess its not as good for keeping gas good or keeping pump flexible. Buy a $2 bottle of StaBil. I think its good for 20 gallons. Stabil says its only good for 2 years tops in gas. I just mix up like a half pint at a time to run it a while. I never keep any gas even with treatment more than 5 or 6 months.
