I am 46 years old. I haven't been to the doctor for a checkup in, well, 45 years. Seeing all these medical posts here, got me to thinking about if I'm just buying time. I eat LOTS of fats, few veggies & grains, and vurtually NO fruits. I drink very little water, and eat LOTS of sugars & salts.
In One 7 Day Week: 14 double servings of meat. 14 double servings of potatoes/pasta/rice. 5 servings of vegitables. 3 servings of fruit. 12 slices of bread. 1 cake. 18 eggs. 2 pounds of bacon. 1 pound of butter. 14 candy bars. 1 large bag of chips. 32oz of cheese. 1 gallon of milk. 1/2 gallon icecream. 14 sodas. 6 beers. 7 double-sized Rockstar Juiced. 2 glasses of water. 7 Centrums. 6 packs of smokes. 70 bong hits.
I don't exercise. I'm six foot tall and have weighed 199 pounds for 10 years. I don't feel anything wrong with me, but am I just fooling myself at 46 years old?
How old are you, and what is your condition? Do you have medical problems? What's your lifestyle?

I try to eat a low fat, high protein and high fiber diet (and I never eat meat). I am overly fond of carbs, however (pasta, potatoes, etc.)
I live in a desert climate, so I drink between 2 quarts and 1 gallon of water daily, depending on the time of year.
I exercise moderately (walking, tennis) and have never been a smoker.
Despite all of the above, I have a litany of small ailments ranging from elevated cholesterol to the mild, beginning stages of arthritis in my lower right spine. I also wear corrective lenses for reading, and the hearing in my left ear is impaired.
Still, I'm grateful to be in pretty good health overall.

Actually just saw a doc not too long ago. I'm thrity-five, six foot three and one hundred eighty pounds. Don't smoke, rarely drink, excercise when I can, and generally try to eat a little on the healthy side. Blood pressure was 117 over 79, cholesterol was 134, and when the doctor was checking my lungs, she said I take incredibly long breaths. I think I'm in halfway decent shape. Dear Lord Boonie! Sounds like you're a walking tub of Crisco. I know it's going to suck, but if you want to stay on this rock for a while, you're probably going to have to change your lifestyle around. If not for you, do it for the forum. We'd miss ya around here if something happened.

Aus....dammit. Boondawg, same age and such. I don't really give a damn. And will probably live a very long life regretting it. I am in good health. Physicals every year. Full head of hair, don't wear glasses, never miss work because I am sick. Mentally....a whole different animal.

I've never had a general checkup. I only see the doc if I'm sick, which is rare. I'm 26 and eat whatever I feel like, which is not as healthy as it should be, but could be worse. I hate fast food. I mtn bike, white water raft, backpack, camp, ATV, canoe, hike, etc.
I don't take meds for anything, don't have any health issues that I'm aware of (I'm allergic to cats, and I have a cat. I take Flonase for that), my vision has remained 20/15 since elementary school. I'm becoming less active because work hours have increased as I've gotten older, and work behind a desk all day. My blood pressure has been a bit higher (but still acceptable) the last few times I've been to the doc. My weight fluctuates every winter. I'm 5'11", 170lbs in the summer, 160 in the winter due to lost muscle mass I'm assuming.

i'm 36, 5'9" or 9& 1/2", depending on time of day. i'm in great shape, in my opinion. my weight, eh, fluctuates... depending on the weather, my mood, and how many cookies you put in front of me! usually between 143-145. i walk, dance, in-line skate, yoga, jog a little, sand car parts... i eat junk food, but i balance it out with a better than average diet. fruit, veggies, lean meat, fish(salmon! crab!) i eat 2 eggs every morning, throwing out one of the yokes, only wheat toast. i don't put butter or salt on my food, don't eat fried foods at all. i don't drink, don't smoke any of the plants of the world. don't do any drugs except the ones prescribed for me. i'm on a low maintenance dose of HRT, i take flonase for my allergy to my chinchillas, and a GNC women's UltraMega broad-spectrum vitamin each day. i see my endocrinologist every 6 months, and have a full cbc, liver functions, and blood lipids checked. my values are stellar, so sez my endo. i see my dentist whenever i feel 'em getting too plaque-ey, or when there's a tender toothie. all my special needs are attended to too, and everything's vibrant and happy so far. my worst problems? some contact dermatitis from the pet dander/overwashing, and intermittent back problems with C5 and T2, a carry-over from my old life. i was a gym rat and martial artist for many years. still, i'm still creaking along with youthful enthusiasm, hoping to live another 36! woo!

I'm 20, I eat whatever looks and tastes good, be it cheap ramen noodles for a week (dry or otherwise), McDonald's as my only meal of the day, or everything in the fridge... I can't afford a doctor, I often feel like crap (e.g. now when I can't afford to get my Fiero running again *or* the gas *or* the food itself), and, well... I just figure, screw it. If I die at 30, it's 60-odd less years I don't have to put up with this BS.

Yeeeeeeeeees, it makes PERFECT sense.
Sure does.
Meet all kinds of people when you deal with the public. Bob Pierce had problems with his computer and I was on dells ass for about 3 weeks until I finally got the problem resolved.. He was a marathon runner about your age.. He was a scuba diver, avid biker and hiker (many pictues attesting to all this hung on his walls), his fridge was FULL of waters of all different kinds..(good stuff) NOOO soda. He was a Sherif for Martin Co. Probably the only cop I ever like and THAT says alot! He saw the Doc regular and was the picture of health and probably could have been the spokes person for the health dept. which he did do as a kind of community service when he spoke to school kids. Very cool guy. Didn't see much of him after I fixed his PC but since I was in and out of the department on a regular basis I asked about him recently. He died a month ago... about 5 months after he was diagnosed with skin cancer. The reason he languished... "perfect health"

i'm in excellent health. for my age. an asteroid could fall from the sky tomorrow and change all that.
lay off the whale meat, blubber is only good for eskimos. youre not an eskimo. you dont live in an igloo, you dont hunt with a harpoon from a kayak, you dont share your wife with strangers who happen by to visit, and you dont put your old people out on the ice floes. at least i hope not.

i hear he likes to rub noses though. who can blame him?
actually, i've started to express affection for people by touching foreheads like Teyla on Stargate: Atlantis. it's more than a handshake, but less than a hug. i like it.

I used to think that way.
Always said I was never going to make it to 30, then never thought I would make it to 40,
Swore I wouldn’t make it to 50, dam was I mistaken.

Yep. You're only dieing from cancer when someone TELLS you you are! Hommie don't play that.
Just a word of caution for people who don't like to go to the doc.
One of my best mates has been the picture of health most of his life. He had his rough and crazy years when younger - did a lot of drugs, but cleaned up, and stayed clean. He drinks and smokes and was slightly overweight (20 - 30lbs), but he was VERY physically active. Great stamina. Good reflexes. Only problem was allergies, so he took over the counter allergy meds.
Well, he never went to the doc because he didn't have health insurance and it was too expensive. Fast forward to last December, and he started coming down with a cold. No biggie - got some NyQuil and kept going. When he started getting dizzy and blurred vision at work, we took him to the hospital. By the time he got there, he was having multiple strokes, multiple heart attacks, sky high blood pressure (like 220 / 190), and was in end stage renal failure. If he'd got to the hospital even 20 minutes later, he would have died. They later told him he'd had so many small strokes, his brain scan looked like his brain had the measles.
He spent 2 months in the hospital and going to rehab. Dialysis 3 times a week because his kidneys shut down. 3 different BP meds to control his blood pressure. Some coordination and mental ability lost due to stroke, and we're still assessing the full extend of the damage to his heart. Stamina? Gone. He'll never be 100% again.
He's been incredibly lucky. After several months on dialysis, his kidneys started working again. They're only at about 20% capacity, but that's enough so he doesn't have to take dialysis. He's on a very strict diet, and tons of meds.
The cause? High Blood Pressure. A simple checkup and either a diet change or prescription for BP would have avoided all of it.
Some people hate doctors. I don't like them myself, but I like living more than I hate going to the doc.
