Hint: It's not entirely what it looks like, take a close look at the tail end of the fuselage.

Still no complete ID. Scott-Wa has narrowed the range. Another view.

You got her! This revolutionary plane was powered by both a prop/piston engine in the front and a small jet in the rear. It would have entered service in the Pacific against the Japanese if the war had not ended when it did.

Still waiting on the other one, it appeared in a very strange movie in the 1970's. Only three were built.

Granitelli turbo Indy racer.

Almost... Turbine, not turbo. Indy 500 1967, Parnelli Jones driving for him, led 171 out of 200 laps and lost when had a transmission bearing failed in lap 197. Everything says they were immediately banned but the next year it took the pole with Joe Leonard driving. The Lotus STP turbine car flamed out on a restart and also lost with a couple of laps to go. Then Granitelli went back to 4 strokes...

The USAC restricted the width of cars, forcing the elimination of the turbines.

They ran for two years, then USAC did some research to find out how to slow 'em down, and placed restrictions on intake size, engine placement, (no more side by side w/driver) etc.

How could the first one be easier?
The very strange movies from the 70s that I thought of were "Death Race 2000", "A Clockwork Orange", and "The Cars That Ate Paris". Am I close?
