ok to give some background i was at my brother's house in MN over the weekend. he's still in kuwait. they had a heat/ac guy come out and take a look at the furnace for the winter. guy said there was a damper off the downstairs furnace that needed to be replaced. told my sister in law you could pick it up "anywhere"..
so i figure hey i'm pretty handy. i pull the part out, its about 5 inch steel duct work. about 8 inches tall. comes off the furnace and goes to the exhaust pipe going out of the house. here's the deal, its 4 little "vents" in it. they are a poly-something? metal. when it gets hot they bend to allow the gases to release, when they cool down they close.
i go to every hardware/ac/heat shop in mankato. nobody has seen one in 50 years! wtf? i left it with the best shop i came across and the guy calls me back and says they don't exist, obsolete, nothing, nada...
any suggestions? ideas?

Did the guy call the material "bimetal"? That stuff bends when you heat it. Don't know anything about replacement for the damper, though. If no one's really seen it in 50 years, could be that the design was outlawed and no longer manufactured. Just speculating...
