That is a unit insignia or crest. it denotes a certain unit, batallion or regiment. as for which i dont know. they are worn on the class a uniform above the shoulders centered on the "shoulder boards" the unit crest is also worn on the beret for enlisteds.

It could be for one of the units from Ft. Bliss or Ft. Hood. [judging from the horse on it, it could be a 1st CAV batallion]

Thanks! He would love to know what unit or battalion...We are only about 5 minutes from Fort Hood, so it is very possible it is from there. His grandfather was in the military and it was in among his memorabilia.

I think the hourglass symbol on the lower left makes it 7th Infantry. Not sure, though. The colors are backwards.

Looks like a Cav Insignia but, I don't recognize it. I'd visit the post museum at Ft. Hood and ask there. I'll bet they can id it.
