Genetic mutation turns tot into superboy.
4-year-old is first documented human case, scientists say.

A German boy, seen here at seven-months old, has a genetic mutation that boosts muscle growth.

Somewhere in Germany is a baby Superman, born in Berlin with bulging arm and leg muscles. Not yet 5, he can hold seven-pound weights with arms extended, something many adults cannot do. He has muscles twice the size of other kids his age and half their body fat.

DNA testing showed why: The boy has a genetic mutation that boosts muscle growth.

The discovery, reported in Thursday’s New England Journal of Medicine, represents the first documented human case of such a mutation.

Cool! He'll be perfect for Teminater 10!

"I'll be back"

I wonder how many genes we're talking about here...and I wonder if his tendons, ligaments, and bones will also be modified?
Very interesting...

Could this be the result of all their master race experiments? Im sorry, I know that was bad an uncalled for, I just couldn't resist. It is a very bad pun, just ignore me.

if his muscles are all growing abnormally fast then wont his heart muscles grow too large

having an enlarged heart can lead to an early death.

This may be true/untrue. Take a athletes heart for example: they make their hearts work much harder then the average human but they do not become enlarged. What happens is the force of the contraction increases to meet the muslces demand for oxygen. Take this and compare it to someone who leads a very inactive lifestyle, bad diet and overweight, the bodys response to compensate is to make the heart work harder thus leading to a potentially enlarged heart. Oh well,it is good speculation though and which one of the two variables could be correct remains to be seen.

Did you happen to notice that the article said that no information about the father was available? I think it is a pretty safe bet that the father's genes were genetically engineered.

There is a wide variety of genetic variations among the human race. We are not very far from being able to custom design our offspring just like ordering options on a car.

What about the Russians??? Remember when they pumped that guy up with secret chemicals and then he kicked the crap out of Rocky?

That's why biological experimentation is so wrong...Just look at the results!

Jeffy Goldblum: He became a human-fly hybrid. result :he died

Sigorney Weaver: messed around with alien DNA, and had an alien pop out of her chest: result: She died (then got cloned and came back, but that's another story)

Dolf Lungren: He got pumped up and kicked Rockys' ass: result : he died -oops, no, he just lost the fight...but his career sure died (did many many awful movies)

what other monstrocities have we created due to our "testing"?

Godzilla...

Giant mutant insects...

and perhaps the most frightening of all...SPAM.

God help us all....

I wanna see his upper body!

He looks like me a little....when I was a baby:

I wish they'd take some samples of his DNA, and play with it HEAVILY...and did the same with people who have perfect vision, and that one family that had almost unbreakable bones, and people with great circulatory systems, and some from Einstein, and a few from ELvis...and see what they come up with. Bring on the Flying Iguanas!

there were people in the US in the early part of the 20th century heavily into eugenics, so it wouldnt be all that strange. of course, the US hasnt tried to exterminate anyone recently, so i dont find american attempts to create the ubermensch quite so frightening.

is this a result of the same thing? http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2004/04/14/wgrow14.xml&sSheet=/news/2004/04/14/ixnewstop.html LOOK! The Dutch are taller than the Americans! MUST BE ENGINEERED!

How about a european immunity to AIDS? http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/sci_tech/highlights/011025_ccr5.shtml

Is that part of a plot to wipe the rest of the world out, leaving only the AIDS resistant people behind?

OR MAYBE.................JUST MAYBE...............There is such a thing is natural selection, survival of the fittest, and evolution.

Why can't this be just a natural mutation? Mutations happen all the time, and it is the keystone of the theory of evolution. Mutations happen, making an individual of a species better or worse. If better, it's oppurtunity to survive and procreate is improved. I doubt this has anything to do with genetic manipulation. Besides, how many nazi genetic experiments lasted past 1945? What year is this? How old is the baby? It doesn't add up.

Also, there is a mutation that effects donkeys (or maybe burros, but I am not sure), which doubles their musculature. They had one at the Ag building when I went to school. It looked freaky. Maybe this is along those lines. (Or perhaps it was a Wermacht überdonkey.)

An interesting thread.

uberdonkey?
now youve opened up the evolution can-o-worms. i suppose to a creationist, it must be eugenics?
this should be fun to watch.

both interesting reads, thanks.
the first article concludes that europeans and the dutch in particular are taller because of better health care via their welfare states. depending on how you feel about the "Welfare State", no conspiracies involved.
the second says that immunity to aids was conferred by surviving the black death in the 1300s. guess those europeans should be a little more sharing with their DNA when they go abroad.

humor, lex, humor.

Yeah, what is the mystery here? This is the next evolutionary leap we have been waiting for. In 4-5 generations all eastern europeans are going to be like that.

I dont understand how this kid can be the 'result' of mutated DNA if his mother and uncles have similar characteristics - its only a mutation if you are totally different from your parents

sounds like he simple inherted the condition from both parents

this has nothing to do with mutations or evolution.

quote
Researchers would not disclose the German boy’s identity but said he was born to a somewhat muscular mother, a 24-year-old former professional sprinter. Her brother and three other close male relatives all were unusually strong, with one of them a construction worker able to unload heavy curbstones by hand.

In the mother, one copy of the gene is mutated and the other is normal; the boy has two mutated copies. One almost definitely came from his father, but no information about him has been disclosed. The mutation is very rare in people.

if you inherit unusual traits from your parents, you are not a mutant - you are just a decendant of your freaky family tree.
