Detailed Vehicle History Definitions:

Accident
CARFAX receives information on accidents in most states when an official police report is filed. The level of detail in the accident record varies by state depending on the state's accident report requirements. CARFAX recommends you obtain a vehicle inspection from your dealer or an independent mechanic for any car involved in an accident.

First Owner
When the first owner(s) obtains a title from a Department of Motor Vehicles as proof of ownership.

Lemon Law Vehicle
A vehicle with major problems that has been repurchased by or had its price renegotiated with the manufacturer. The state marks its official records or issues a title brand for lemon law vehicles. Laws vary by state as to the specific requirements for a "lemon". Most manufacturers issue some buybacks that are not the result of Lemon Laws but rather a courtesy.

New Owner Reported
When a vehicle is sold to a new owner, the Title must be transferred to the new owner(s) at a Department of Motor Vehicles.

Personal Use
Vehicle was registered by the owner for private or personal use.

Looks like a minor deer accident, a mfg buyback, not such a pretty report here!

Yeah, I'm at work and we just got the truck here (I work for GM in corrosion engineering) and I looked up the VIN to see the vehicle history and any work its had done at a GM dealer, and it came back with a whole bunch of somewhat unrelated components replaced at about 34500 miles, so I was curious if he hit something in it or what. Looks like he found dinner We bought the truck back, although I can't for the life of me figure out why, it says it was an administrative buyback other than legal, so that disqualifies the lemon law (that and he didn't have it in to have the same thing replaced 3 times).

But yeah, at 34500 miles the throttle body, steering I-shaft, transfer case drain plug, prop shaft slip joint, rear leaf spring retaining bolts, rear tranny mount, and tranny cross member were all replaced and the powertrain controller was reprogrammed. Strange.

Thanks a bunch, although still doesn't explain the buyback

Nick

No problem... could just be "one of those customers" who after having a few problems with a new vehicle freaks out and flys off the handle until they give in to his demands. Likely his demand is/was a new truck (presumably a newer model as well), and the dealer put it in as a Lemon just to satisfy the paperwork requirements.

*note: I don't have any dealership experience, nor have I ever worked for an auto manufacturer... but I did work retail - and I've seen the same situation on a smaller scale more times than I care to recount!

Yeah, thats about what I figured....but we bought it back with darn near 100,000 miles on it. That just surprises me. Ah well, gives us a field vehicle to look at

I don't want to cause conflict or anything but my news station just reported on carfax so I went on and tried to see if they were right. what they said was carfax can not always tell you the whole truth about your vehical so I checked my old 9Bravada that was totaled in an accidnet and they had it coming up as a clean report which it most definatly was not... heres the link to the story

True... it is possible for CarFax to miss things (as stated in all their disclaimers & fine print). But it more-frequently-than-not does offer beneficial info to a prospective buyer. It can also help identify the history of partial vehicles & parts (like engines) to determine mileage and condition. Good reminder though!

Example: In my case I have been comparing between two nearly-identical 2000 Subaru Legacy GT Sedans... one is Bright Red with an auto, the other is black with a 5-speed. After running a carfax on both, I found the the Black 5-speed was a dealer trade in from that same dealership. Turns out the Red one was originally a corperate-leased fleet vehicle in Florida (which explains it's tinted windows). Even though I was leaning towards the 5-speed black car anyway... I'd rather have a privately-owned vehicle than a previously-leased one, and thanks to CarFax I was able to make that informed decision (heck, the dealer was awfully surprised that I already knew the entire history of the car when I arrived last night).

My second example is my "GreenGT" - bought it nearly 10 years ago now... knew it had some minor cosmetic body damage. But didn't find out until 2 years ago when I first started running CarFax that the car actually has a Salvage title (it was re-issued later as a normal title, which is why I didn't know it!).

So it can certainly work both ways - although it's no guarantee!

(BTW: MRJ - your thread was responded to, Wichita & Trevor... you've got PMs).
