We currently have two beautiful, friendly and playfull Ferret's. We have had Ferret's for many, many years. My daughter Tarrah and I are also starting up a Ferret newsletter. Anyone on the forum who has or had Ferrets, or just likes them in general please let us know. If you would like a copy of our upcoming first ferret issue also let us know :o)
My brother had one and really liked it. I wasn't around it much. He sold it when his first baby came, out of fears that it would be just a little too curious or whatever it is you say they are. Fun to watch, for sure.

I LOVE ferrets but, as I have 3 cats, I don't think they'd last too long at my house (mmmmm - lunch!). Actually, I love just about anything furry. Some friends of mine had a ferret for a while. He loved to chew / burrow / hide down in the couch. They couldn't keep him out of there! He tore it to shreds. Luckily, they found another home for him. The couch went to the dump. His name was shmoopy (Seinfeld fans may appreciate...).
Wish I could have one. Good luck with your newsletter. Sounds like fun.

"out of fears that it would be just a little too curious or whatever it is you say they are."
Not knowing how your friends Ferret was raised, or it's behavior, I can't say if his concerns were justified enough to get rid of a family pet. If I wasn't sure how a certain pet might react around a newborn, I might do the same for the safety of my child. I hope that seeing the statement about the friend getting rid of the Ferret, doesn't scare anyone who may be considering getting one or more Ferret's at some point.
Ferret's are as safe or safer than any other pet. If a Ferret is brought up right which is true with any other animal, they can be great pets. There are some animal exceptions in my case though. For example, I wouldn't let a kitten or puppy near a newborn, as I have seen puppies and kittens see their reflection in the shiney part of eyes and try to poke at it with their paws. I have seen eyes get accidently scratched, or badly poked this way.
Also, how many of you have seen dogs kept in pens or seperated in another part of the house, so the "little" kiddies can roam around safely at times?
Both of our younger kids, Tarrah and Jordan, grew up with Ferrets around them. They loved the ones we had then, and they love the ones we have now that they are older. Ferrets usually live 5 to 7 years, so we are on our second batch of ferrets now. They have done school projects about Ferrets, because they see and hear people who do not really "know" about Ferrets. To give you a good example, this is also true with many people and the Fiero as you probably allready know. Those people who don't really know the car, but think they do. We Ferret owners get that also.
Does your friend plan on getting another Ferret or two when the little one is a bit older?
For those who are interested in Ferret's. There are many web sites that you can easily visit that are a great resource for information. Just go to a web browser like Yahoo or Metacrawler and type in ferret. Also, as mentioned earlier, the kids and I will have a Ferret newsletter available soon.

"I LOVE ferrets but, as I have 3 cats, I don't think they'd last too long at my house (mmmmm - lunch!)."
We have two cats also, and they get along great with the Ferret's. The younger cat loves to play with the Ferret's and vice versa. The Ferret's are less than half the size of the older cat, but they hold their own in the playful wrestling they do. The cats are usually the ones who finally say enough is enough. Don't be surprised if the ferret doesn't become the dominate pet in the house, over even the big dog-assuming the big dog is not a mean growl and bark at everything new type of pet.
If anyone would like, I can e-mail some great pics of the cats and Ferret's playing, laying around the house and all co-existing together. I also have some great pics of the kids doing their Halloween pumpkins, or trying to, with alot of help from the Ferrets. Just great stuff!
I know many Ferret owners who also have cats, birds, dogs or other pets too. These animals all see each other as playmates and friends, not food. However in your case, if your cats are older now, and have become "mousers", than I may agree with your statement :o)
Sometimes when they come into the Vets we need to give them a little shock therapy to behave. They are really tough to hold since they can bend and twist so many different ways. Its kind of like the movie "One that flew over the cuckoo's nest" except with a ferret on the EST table... hehehe
If they didn't stink I would probably get one. They keep the cats busy (cheap toy)...

All readers, please understand the ferret was my brother's (not his wife's, get it?), and it wasn't his idea for the baby to "displace" it, he just had to obey the ball-n-chain y'know? And no, his kids are big now, but he never got another ferret. He's been into Harleys. I don't get it, but that's another flame for another topic.

Keep those requests for the "new" soon to be printed Ferret newsletter coming in. But please post here if you want one so we can get an accurate count of how many we need to print. You can still send us an e-mail too if you want. The first issue is free. Just let us know your mailing address. You can e-mail that part if you don't want to post your addy on the forum :o) Thanks.

Dude, I hope you don't think I was flaming you. I was just curious if he ever got another one, and wanted to make sure know one thought they were bad around kids :o)
I have 2 ferts. They are so funny. One is black and white just like the one in the picture above. The other is Albino, white w/red eyes. I like when they get to playing and they start hopping sideways, I play with them on the bed and they somtimes hop right off the side. So funny! I also have a cat and dog and they all get along great. As for snakes, yeah, they dont get along well at all. Say by-by to the snakes head. I found that a spray bottle w/water works good for teaching them right and wrong. Anyone notice how they (atleast mine anyway) will only crap in the very corner of the litter box? They wont just go for the box, has to be the very corner. Also, the black and white one, she like to get into patatoes and she will pick them up and carry them until she drops and trips over them.
