I work until my whole body is sore on my Fiero, I replaced the starter, detent cable, plugs/wires, I'm about to change the exhaust out and my mom tells me "You're putting more money into it than it is worth, go get that thing junked. Everyone I know says they are junk, a pain to work on and expensive to get parts for." Yeah right, some people just don't understand I guess. Anyone else have people like this?
If they think Fieros are junk and a pain to work on, and expensive to get parts for, tell them to try working on a new Mini Cooper sometime. Now those are a pain to work on and have silly expensive parts.

Keep it up, I have heard all that too although recently I have gotten more and more respect. The people close to me have given up on me (and I think they think my car is pretty fine). And the naysayers I used to meet are just blown away to see one in such nice shape.
My boss said "Is that a FIERO?! DAYUM!!! I used to date a girl with a Fiero, that's the only thing I miss about her..."
Of course, Mine is a POS, so I spend all my car fund keeping it on the road instead of making it cool. I'm gonna have to wait til I can get a nicer one to make my own.
My family thinks i'm crazy because I work 6 days a week and spend the 7th making my Fiero road worthy enough to get me to work the next week..
Your going to get that a lot. My one neighbor has no idea why I'm into these "old things" he caught me workin on my IMSA one day and was talkin so much sh*t on it. I looked up and said hows it feel to know i could strip the body off this thing and buy 2 of your Elantra's. about a week ago i took him for a ride in the formula and he shut up pretty quick.
your always going to get haters when you get something different I was banned off a local tuner forum because i liked them so much. every little miscreant on there would get into battles with me over it and i would kindly explain its my preference of car. You like your Evo mommy and daddy bought you I like my Fiero that i bought myself.

My co-workers enjoy riding me about mine (88 4cyl notchie) and for the most part I will join in from time to time. After all, there is alot you can compliment and criticize. They will however admit that they are pretty cool little cars when no one else is around.

take it from a guy whos friends are all ricers, its worth it in the long run. there is nothing like pulling away from two civcs and a 200sx at the same time in a car that is twice as old as any of them, then doing victory dounuts afterwords just to rub it in
Most of the problem comes from the Fiero has reached that point in its life cycle that most are beat down, and if they are still running they are owned by people who just use it for transportation or have had it for years and its paid off. There are few really nice examples of fieros out there as compared to the fixer uppers. When i first got mine I used to catch some grief but after i got all its bug worked out and got it cleaned up but i don't get any grief except from moron ricers who have to race anything that has an engine or peddles. There are two kinds of people in this work those who get fieros and those who don't.
GOD YES!!!!! And it bugs the crap outta me! My parents and older brother were so pissed when I bought my Fiero. "It doesn't have air bags!" "You'll die if you get hit because it's so small." "You're wasting your money on this!" ON and ON and ON and ON!!! Meanwhile THEY wanted me to get a new car. The Fiero was new...to me! They never put any effort into HELPING me find a new(er) car, plus they kept looking at dealerships where I needed a co-signer and everybody in my family (except me, thank god) has TERRIBLE credit! GRRRR. They were no help, so I stopped involving them in my car choices. Keep your head high, and show them how great it is once you finish it up!

Ask your mom if she'd rather you spend all your money and time on booze, cigarettes, loose women and staying out all night.

Usually doesn't bother me until I get the "it's un-safe" thing. It's all plastic, what is going to protect you in a crash? Personally I've given up on most people
I get "does that have a V8 in it?" a lot more than I get haters. Even people who typically don't like Fieros like mine. It might be because its a '88GT with long-tube headers, y-pipe, no cat and an ocelot muffler so it sounds nice. Its also bright red with a 5-speed, leather interior, Corvette 12" brakes, etc. So it doesn't look like a POS, it actually looks (and drives) like an exotic. I've built it up so it has excellent braking and handling, and decent power (which I'm working on improving). I've surprised a LOT of people on on and off ramps on the highway .

My whole family. There's even a youtube video my brother made with that Adam Sandler song "piece of sht car"... It's a video compiled of all the cars I've owned. And all of my cars had respectable traits, just nothing was ever 100% finished. And no car is ever 100% finished if it's a daily and you use it as a hobby.
My cars were from first to last: - Dodge Stratus stock engine/body, back seat had 3 Alpine Type Rs and a 3200w amp. But it was my first car... - s10 brick body blazer (84? they don't make many parts for the firebirds or blazers with this v6, especially broken real axles) - CRX with B16 swap, not a single dent/perfect body, primer black, but that's the way I wanted it to be. I didn't want shiny paint on it. - 89 probe gt turbo, perfect paint and body, they still hated. - 96 Accord, I didn't even touch this car. It still had perfect clear coat and body, my family said it was crap. - 89 wagovan, I spent 500-800$ on just wheels and springs, but there was no wagon enthusiasts in my area who wanted to ride together. - 4efte tercel, I got 1.3L to do 13.89 on the 1/4. If it's not Nascar, then it's not a race to them. - Saturn sc2, hot air mods and antenna shaved for gas mileage testing, they hated. - And then they even threw my Scion tC in. A brand new car in mint condition.
At Christmas, we had like a gift swap, but all the gifts were to be jokes. My brother was assigned me. He made a whole video of all my "pos cars". The whole family laughed. And then had in depth conversation and more laughter at my POS cars. They even called the iroc wheels on my blazer "ghetto wheels" or "wheels from the hood". The wheels were perfect!!!
I dono, maybe it's because EVERYONE in my family drives a v8 Suburban or Truck, basic model, everything factory, no window tint, no bug shield on the hood even, not even tire shine.
I would pull into parking lots, and turn an enthusiasts head to the point where he almost breaks his neck at the sound of my turbo. But anyone else who doesn't know the awesomeness behind an older car with a perfect body, or has no idea the time you put into your car, will just judge you wrongly.
Maybe it's the same way I see them spending 3,000$ on a t.v.. I never watch t.v., sometimes netflix, but it stops there. I'm definitely different than the rest of my family, more than likely the black sheep.
Can't wait to hear their crap when they see my Fiero... It'll anger me till my ears bleed.

You need a new family and/or to tell them you won't visit if they need to go out of their way to make comments and take time to edit videos! At first I thought okay this family is probably right on 1 or 2 vehicles but to tease on EVERY car including a newer model Scion tells me its nothing but jealousy. Ditch em!
When tuners give you crap, just race them for money. Honest to God, I've taken local tuners/ricers for over $1,000 in my 3800SC Fiero and even my old 3.4l GT.
In Muncie at the AutoZone on McGalliard, they all go hang out and talk shot to each other every Friday night when it's warm. I have no idea where this "club" originated, but there's 7-15 cars most nights. I rolled in for the first time in my 3800SC Fiero in February while my girlfriend was with me. My Fiero has no interior, bad paint, and generally looked like a junker. I got out of the car and started trying to be friendly, and then someone yelled "Is that a ****ing domestic?". He had a newish Scion TC with pretty big wheels and some kind of hideous hood scoop, there were a few 90's Hondas (CRX and don't remember other 2), a newer Celica, an Eclipse, and a BMW that wasn't really a sport model. They all stood around my car laughing at it and pointing out broken/missing stuff. I asked "Which one of you has the fastest car?". 3 of them immediately started arguing about who had the fastest one, but it came down to the dude with the Scion (Turns out it was turbo'd) and the Eclipse.
I told them I'd give them both 200$ if one of them took me in a race from a dig, but if they lost they both gave me 200$.. Since they had just been "dissing" me and talking real big in front of their friends, they were obligated to accept. The Eclipse guy asked me what kind of engine I had (My car was loud) and I said "Just a V6 with a custom exhaust". Nobody inquired further. They bitched and wanted to race from a roll and I told them that's how 16 year olds race, and real mean line up next to each other and launch from a stop. We drove over to 67, which has a long and out of the way stretch of 3 lane north of McGalliard. By the time we got there the Folger can mufflers were giving me a headache. We lined up at the McGalliard/67 stoplight looking north on 67. I watched the other light turn yellow and knew mine was about to turn green, so I got the jump on both of them, not like it mattered. I completely obliterated them, the Eclipse didn't even keep accelerating after about 40. At 70, I had at least 15 car lengths on the Scion and he backed off. I went back to the trans shop on the corner where their buddies had parked. Olga was laughing the whole time.
The Scion guy was there, and very agitated, but paid up like a man. The Eclipse guy never came back. I was surprised either of them paid up, honestly. The Scion guy said he could take me from a roll, to which I replied "Double or nothing?" and he refused by saying he had to go meet his girlfriend. Nobody else would race, and I finally showed them my engine. They all called the supercharger a turbo, lol...they were actually pretty cool after that, and the Scion guy about threw up when I said I had about 7k in theFiero but they could be built that fast even cheaper. He had around 20k in his Scion, or so he claimed.

My wife hates the way my Fiero looks, let's face it, it's rough right now. I plan to show her I can build a better car than I start with. Luckily she is giving me plenty of time to work on it. It's coming along pretty fast. I think it's the hubcap wheels that are detouring her. I'll have to hurry up and get wheels for it.

Sounds like my wife. I have yet to even drive mine. Its been a driveway sports car.
That's OK though, I enjoy the time working on it and so does my 5 year old girl. One day it will be running and we will have fun with it. Until then, let the building commence. :P

Doesn't matter what you have, if it's different from what they think you should have, they're going to hate whatever it is you got. Remember guys, these cars are for US to enjoy, not other people. When you put $10k into the Fiero to get it running the way you want with the engine you want and the color and mods you want... then take that car out on the open road and feel the revs, that's the reward. Enjoy your ride guys, even if nobody else does.

Yeah go buy some new car with all is computer controlled crap, and emissions BS all over it and then show them how much that thing would cost to get fixed.. Plus, you cant do it yourself on new cars.. Plus most parts for new cars these days are all made in japan or china.. Which means you pay import prices on "American" made cars..
Yes, your right.. Some people just don't get it! And probably never will.

I totally agree. I really don't think modern cars are practical at all. Excessive complexity has killed that. You know those goofy decorative plastic shields they always put over the engine on new cars? I think it's pretty symbolic of what those cars have become - an unserviceable black box. One of the reasons I drive an old car is because they're much easier to service, more pleasant to work on, and the parts are much cheaper. I just replaced a $20 oxygen sensor on my 86. Contrast that with the suckers that have to spend $75 each for 4 separate sensors. And for all the crap people love to dish out about the performance of old engines, I enjoy the 2.8 very much. Nobody appreciates simple (==practical) engines with good torque anymore, but I quite specifically prefer an engine like this over any Rube Goldberg design, no matter how many million HP they claim at 9000rpm.
For practicality, I think it's hard to beat a basic Duke. They're not fast, but that's not the point. In a pinch you can run them on spit and bailing wire.
