BTW this little talk prove me my first idea was ok - cancel this shitty ashtrays in all but I dont make new console yet. First, I need more place for switches and so, second, these doors are glued and glued and glued... many previous owners of my fiero had johnyrottins problem, I think

they actually are made of some type of heat resistant composite. not plastic or metal.

yes, it`s a casting of some type of composite, sorry, don`t recall exactly...

edit to add: these types of composites some times are reinforced with resins or metals like aluminum they are a mix of diferent
materials depending the needs, like KEVLAR, CORRIAN etc.

One of the original plastics was called a Phenolic. I wonder if it is that.

The trade name was 'Bakelite', and it was a heavy resin that you could cast.

It should not melt from a cigarette burn though...

It could be but i`m not sure, Bakelite is one of the earliest if not the first, it`s still used in electronic components.

Anyone tried a "Magnet" on these doors? That would rule out common steel.

Magnet....nothing....steel ruled out on mine. I am pretty sure mine are all plastic. I looked at the broken ones and they are plastic.

Just went to see mine , i tought too that they were metal but they are plastic 88GT .
Altough mine are half metal and half plastic cause i glued a piece of stainless steel on them . LOL .
