Since I lucked up and found three 355 mufflers for the grand total of $150. My plan is to use them on my Shelby S1 swaps and maybe even on my 3800SC swap. But I want to make them fully functional with an exhaust bypass. Has anyone used these in their swap? If so, I would like to your take on it? Do and don’ts, ideals, and pictures of your setup any info will be apreciated.

I’ve heard that those cause a serious performance loss and can actually increase the likelihood of a fire. I think in most states they are banned and as a result just plain illegal. What you need to do is send them to me so I can properly dispose of them and protect you and your cars.

I've heard the same. If you want an independent second analysis (free!), I can probably make room on my agenda to try it out on a N*. After all, there's you, then there's DLCLK87GT, and me... and there's three mufflers. Coincidence?

But seriously, I've read as much as I can find on the dual exhaust paths on the F355 but nowhere have I found a good layout of the actual exhaust system... where is/are the valves that redirect the exhaust?... what are the primary and secondary paths?... does the muffler have anything to do with it? If you find any of this info out, you should PM it to me too as inquiring minds live here too.

BTW: did you get my jackshaft mount drawing?

yes, I did thanks and as a matter of fact my 4"x8" piece of Al came in the mail yesterday. Here is a break down of the exhaust parts on the 355. I am talking to a guy on one of the ferrari forums and he 's going to email me some pictures of his engine/exhaust setup while it is out of the car.

Thanks BMT. It's pretty clear how they go about re-routing the gasses now, but the logic behind the timing and amount of the bypass valve opening is something they probably spent lots of money figuring out. I doubt the valve is purely of an open/close configuration... it's probably a pulse width modulated vacuum motor sort of like the EGR valve on the Fiero... but who knows? DId you see the prices on some of that stuff? Incredible. I think I'll stick with my replicas!

Gotta love the absence of a "collector" on the Ferrari headers

Probably has something to do with the 180* flat crankshaft that allows each bank of four cylinders to be treated as a four cylinder engine.

yep no collector really needed with the even firing pulses ..although I would probably use a small merge collector

It looks like even MR2s are working on this Exhaust system mod:
