Just for fun - some Thermal images of my 3800sc engine. It is cooling down in the photo. I was looking for the true "hot spots" in the compartment attempting to ferrett out an idle issue.
Same - mine gets freakishly hot. My idle issue only turns up when the car is at full operating temp, not when cool or warming up. I can stave off the symptoms by leaving the decklid up, but it is a bit hard to drive like that Was hoping to get an idea of where the heat is coming from, and especially the proximitiy of those parts to the ignition bits.

All the heat comes from the SC, exhaust, trans, ect. and it's hard to keep the temps down. Where is you intake filter located?

CAI in the wheel well. Guessing at this point it's either a coil about to give up the ghost, or a sensor on slow bake. Or the fuel pump, or ... or... or...

Camera is a Flir B360. I do Thermography (aka infrared photography) on the side - primarily home energy loss audits and flat roof inspections, but have done a few oddball jobs as well. Anything where being able to measure temp and temp differences can be used to diagnose issues. Only thing I dont do is paranormal research, and that's probably only because the opportunity hasn't presented itself yet.

We had a Thermal Imaging company give us a demo on two of there model cameras. We have a huge hydraulic power unit at work. You would be amazed at how many diagnostic checks can be done with just temperature measurements. needless to say, it was fun playing with these cameras. In a nutshell:
The $7,000 camera was useful for basic visual temperature comparison. The image was fuzzy at best, but quite useful.
The $40,000 camera looked like a retail standard video camera, however, when you point it at someones arm, you can see the blood pulsating through there veins. Now that was fricken cool!
We didn't buy one though It just wasn't worth the price.

Awesome pics. I was looking at some FLIR digital imaging systems in the latest Sears catalog... Out of my price range, but I could certainly find a lot of uses for one.
