I'm thinking about doing a bit more cutting and going right through the firewall to get a bit more depth for the subs. Just wondering if there is anything critical behind the section I plan to cut like fuel lines ect?

+s for quick answers because I plan to do this tomorow.. Well technically later this morning

Yes that's the firewall.. I would like to cut it out, and re-weld a new one an inch or a few back if I can.. And the car does not have AC.

Behind the wall is the engine bay. There are cables and hoses that run back there. You need to look at the backside in the engine bay and see exactly what is there. I don't believe there is anything that you can't move.

That structure is a channel (30 in picture below) welded to the engine bay side of lower section of the firewall (39). It also has a couple of reinforcements (31, 32, 34) welded to it. This acts as a torque bar across the rear. That is why you DO NOT remove the actual torque bar or cut it's welds away from the firewall. What you do is only cut the sheet metal between the "ribs" of the channel. The channel is approx. 8" high and 2.5" deep. When you consider that a sub is usually a minimum of 4 inches deep and greater, this space can reduce the depth of your sub box by almost half!

The passenger side is clear in back. You can almost cut a hole as big as the "outline".
Start small, so you can see exactly where the channel is located.

The right side has the gas filler pipe within the wall. Cut carefully, DO NOT use a welding torch!!

Thanks Tony. That photo basically tells me way more than words ever could!

As you can see from my pics, I've already cut my hole the size of the outline. I've also cut off the flanges on part #34 to get a flatter area to fiberglass on and a bit more room for the magnet.

Now, if you look closely at piece 30 in the drawing as well as in my pics there is that hump right in the passenger side hole... Do you think there will be any harm done in cutting out that hump and then welding a new piece of metal in flat instead. This is just to gain that extra 3/4" that it sticks up as every 1/2" counts in this application.

I was talking to another member of our fiero club. What he did was cut all the way through both firewalls and then weld in a new box about 1.5" behind where the second firewall was cut out..

Think of it as cutting a square hole in the 2nd firewall and then welding a 5 sided box (no front on the box) where the cutout is to gain a bit more depth.

Anybody have any comments on that? Risking the structural integrity of the car, or can it be done right and have no worries about chassis flex?

This is where I'm at right now. I managed to cut down that hump quite significantly by grinding off more of the part #34.
