I found a 1984 Pontiac Fiero Sevice Training book used by GM to familiarize service techs on the car when it first came out. At the back of the booklet is talks about and shows a drawing of an optional engine shade (with the FIERO emblem in the middle of it) that is used to hide the engine when the rear deck lid is opened. The shade hooks to the back wall of the trunk along the top edge and then the other end it fastened to the bottom of the rear deck lid. When the lid is opened the shade opens with it to hide the engine and this is how it is explained in the booklet:
Engine Shade...
An optional shade cover (dealer installed) is available to screen the engine compartment from the luggage compartment. The shade cover, which works the same as the Firebird cargo cover, has a roll-up retractor mounted at the the top of the luggage compartment. The cover hooks to the underside of the rear compartment lid and opens with it. When access to the engine is neeeded, the shade cover is unhooked and returned to the stowed position.
*Screens the engine compartment from view from the rear. *Stows neatly when not in use. *Shields engine heat when using luggage compartment. *Keeps items tossed into trunk from landing in the engine compartment.
Now I have been into Fieros for along time and have never seen or even knew an option like this existed, has anyone else seen this option before or knows someone who has it?

I have heard reference to it but I've never seen even a picture of it. I've seen other cars (can't think of any right off) that have had "Sun shades" of differnt sizes and shapes. I would think some of the hatchbacks would have used something close.

but I think the engine cover was an option that was never installed.

As far as I have ever seen they were never offered. I have seen every option but never one of these. If someone has seen a real one please post but till then I would say it never happened. A dealer also told me they never were offered for what it is worth.
I had considered making one out a F body cover as it was mostly what they were goint to offer.
Scott I will scan the page at work Monday and shoot it your way, then if you can post it here. I sounds like it was never offered even though it shows up in a GM book, but I wonder if it was ever tested and if some do exist or did...

The owner's manuals, training books, etc., have to be printed up in advance of the release of the automobile. When the manuals were printed, the engine cover was a planned option. Sometime between the printing, and the release of the car, it was decided not to offer the engine cover...why, I'm not sure, I'm guessing due to heat issues in the engine compartment. So, although it shows up in various publications, it never became a production option.
I was pretty upset I didn't have one until I realised no one did... still though... My guess is they figured they had enough engine fire problems on their hands already

Sounds cool, but I don't see why an F-body would have one?? The only reason to open the hood is to look at the engine. I don't see why you would want to open the hood so that you can cover up the engine with something else...
But in a Fiero, that would be pretty cool...

I don't get it... it makes much more sense to cover the ugly trunk and look at the pretty engine...

My 1989 Firebird Coupe I owned had this "retractable" screen. Its not in the engine compartment though, its in the rear hatch from the back seat to the edge of the glass so basically no one can see what you have in your "trunk" and it gives it a nice clean look from the outside. I wish my pc wasn't messing up or else i'd load up a picture.
As for the Fiero, I agree, i'd rather look at the engine compartment and cover the trunk area.

That was the only picture I have seen of this cover. It was also in the 1985 owners manuel if I recall.
Most people on this site would not want one but the Idea is the average person who only open the trunk to put things in would not want to see the dirty engine and feel the heat off of a hot engine. It would beneifit someone like my wife who does not understand why I clean the engine compartment in here GTP Grand Prix.

Yes your right Scott times have changed since this option was considered. I also agree with yellowstone our cars have become show pieces and we want everyone to see and enjoy all the work that goes into them. You have to admit though, it is pretty interesting to know sometime before 1984 a compartment shade may have been used on the Fiero and now we find them in every SUV and think what a great idea...
