well, after leaving work on Friday ready to start my Labor day weekend, I got home and notes oil coming out from under my car, I did not think any thing about it at that time but to put a oil pan under the car. I looked a hour later and their was a lot of oil in the pan, not good so I looked at my motor oil and it was ok, then I looked at the trany dip stick ( I have a 88 GT 2.8 5 speed ) I could not be leave my eyes, it was as shiny as chrome and when I passed it over my finger it was like liquid metal. then to throw a wrench into my already pissed off mood my wife said that she has notes that my car has been leaking for about two weeks and she keeps forgetting to tell me . I haven’t picked up the car yet but looking from the top it looks like the out put shaft that goes to the passengers side rear wheel has separated from the trany( the round cylinder that the grease boot is attached to ). so is my trany toast 100%? that trany still works grate, and I am not thinking of doing my engine swap till next summer. can this problem be fixed with out pulling out the trany so that I can try to get some more time out of this trany, that would give me time to find a another trany and switch it out when I do the engine swap.
now I am back to driving my 99 vw beetle I hate that car.

The drive shaft seals on the tranny can be replaced without having to take the tranny out. You need a seal puller or you can pry them out carefully with a screwdriver after you pull the shaft out.
so that meens that shaft is not perminitly installed, thier is no clip ring or somthing that holds that shaft from coming out of the side the trany ?
that what it looks like, that the hole shaft that the greese boot is attached to has moved out word. from the trany( to the right), enough that it came out of the seal, I can see a shiny shaft between trany and the part that holds the greese boot.
any more thoughts or input would help thanks
Thanks Jake_Dragon I will have to get that and I will lift the car this weekend and see how much damage it has. but the good thing is, it sound like I can do this with out pulling out the trany, that is what I realy needed to now, that or the car would sit till I got another trany.

If your suspension travels far enough it could cause the shaft to pull out. It does have snap ring on the end but I was able to pop mine loose with just a little pry bar. Good luck hope everything works out for you.

If the shaft will not come out with a pry bar, hit it on the side with a sledge hammer as you pry on it. This will help get it out. You dont have to hit it hard, just shock it and it will come out. Sometimes they are easy and sometimes they are very difficult.
I am going to try to fix this problem this weekend but I still am going to try to get another trany since I know I just killed years off this tranys life and have it ready to install either when I do my engine swap, or for if I cant fix this one, their is one on eBay
he said that it is a 5 speed but if you read some ones comment to him he told him it looks like a 4 speed. so I have two questions;
is the 86 5 speed the same as the 88 5 speed? ( I say yes but I have to ask ) and what dose this guy mean that it looks like a 4 speed what is he seeing that is making him say that ? or is he just wrong
Thanks for your time

It looks like a 4 speed because it is a four speed. The getrag the cables are perpendicular. In this picture of the tranny there is the bracket that is ran side by side. That would mean it's a 4 speed from a v6 or a izusu 5 speed from a 4 cylinder car.
I'm not too sure the best way to tell the 4 speed and izusu from each other but you'll need a getrag unless you want to replace the shift cables and slave cylinder. Good luck to you.
cool, something I did not know, that their is two type of 5 speed tranys they put in to Fiero’s. I do want to put the same Trany in and I know mine has a getrag but I did not now their was also a izusu 5 speed in fiero’s. did they only put getrag tranys in 88's or do the earlier years have them, I see other years at the junk yard but I have not seen a 88 their yet. ( and I think that is a good thing for fiero’s but bad for me to find parts. FIERO'S LIVE ON
thanks, I will now know a bit more what to look for wile I am looking for another trany
any one got one in North California ( I am in Concord, CA ) probably plenty of them in the south California, every thing is over their. cool custom shops lots of after Market parts, south California is the place.
I started taking the right side hub and assembly apart to remove the drive shaft but am running in to tool problems. I first had to stop becouse I did not have a T55 for the caliper my set only went up to T50.after going to the part store and getting it, I now get to the big nut at the end of the shaft at the wheel bairing and I dont have that socket either now I have to buy one of those, can some one please tell me the size of that nut so I can get the right one the first time for the part store. and some one is telling me it is a metric size
thanks

Axle nut is 30 mm It feels a little loose on mine but it works. Take the nut off before you remove your brakes so you can hold the rotor with your e-brake or you wont be able to get the nut loose.

Like stated before, 86 1/2-88 V6 Fieros had Getrag designed Muncie built 5 speeds Before then V6's had Muncie 4 speeds All the 4 cylinder manuals were Isuzu 5 speeds (There were a few 4 speed manuals in 84 on 4 cylinder cars, but it's my understanding that it is a very small number).
thanks guys, I hope I will not have to replace the hole trans but I want to be ready just in case.
30 mm thanks , I hope I dont have to stop any more becouse of tools this is becoming a drag, I want my fiero back, My VW Beetle is killing me ( I hate that car )
I got it apart and this is what fell out, a bunch of bearings like the after market axle bearing to help your trans last longer , or is thier a stock bearing that goes behind the seal, '
thier is a smaller, thiner bearing farthier in that seems to be ok,
what do you guys think ? what is it and what do i need?
Can you provide any close-up photos of the pieces which came out (other than the axle), and possibly a shot looking "in" to the hole in the transmission where the axle is inserted?
[This message has been edited by dguy (edited 11-03-2005).]
will do, I will try to take pictures of the inside of the hole,
I was able to zoom in on the parts with photoshop
those small thing on the left use to be bearing, and the part on the top is part of what is left of that bearing assembly. bottom part is the seal and the part on the left I dont know, it was floting on the out side of the seal agenst the axle, was that attached to the axle? or was it also part of the Bearing that exploded, and just pushed it's way out thought the damaged seal, as you can see it is all bent up
thanks

I could be wrong, but it looks a hell of a lot like you had both the OEM axle seal in there, and an aftermarket axle support bearing. Would definitely like to see a shot of the side of the transaxle, and a look "in" to the hole where the axle would be inserted.
edit: nevermind... just found your thread in TD&Q.
