I did this one myself about five years ago when I had my 87GT with wood grained shelf liner! https://www.fiero.nl/gallery/Interior/011_8_1.jpg I was happy with it at the time but I want to do something nicer. I've seen the kits that cost about $350.00 and I do like the look of them but their way to pricey! I was thinking of doing my own using real wood! I've got some talent with wood but was wondering what you all thought about it and how would it look. The faceplates are all flat so it should be pretty easy for me. Here are some samples and I think the red oak would most compliment my beechwood interior and red exterior. http://www.rockler.com/ecom7/product_group.cfm?&objectgroup_id=192&catid=47 Of course I'd get 1/8 inch and use many coats of urethane over it as well. I wouldn't order the wood over the internet though because I have an account with my local lumber yard and they can order anything.

I've thought about this myself, the cost of the kits seem high although I haven't priced any of the exotic woods some of these fits are made from. Seems it would be a fairly simple project to undertake, if things come out good you could probably make your initial cost back by selling a few sets on the forum. Give us details as your idea progresses.

BTW I think I remember your wood grain paper covering, I thought it was a great bang for the buck project.

I have thought about using some maple, it is a tight grain wood and would hold up better than some soft woods.
I would also want to laminate it to some aluminum, the thinner the better.
Good luck hope it works out

I'll post pics here as I progress. The hardest piece will be the heater bezel. I had a spare and cut out the vent part. Then ripped the frame of it 1/8 on a table saw so it will sit flush with the faceplate This way I'll be able to attach it to the cut faceplate and still have functional heater/ac vents. I'll also cut it so my after market cd deck fits it perfectly. I'm going to totally eliminate the ashtrays on the shifter plate (no smoking in my Fiero!) and thinking about installing some kind of cup holder instead.

Thanks I was going to do that again but use real veneer from this site http://www.constantines.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=174 but I think the real wood would look classier!

You did an excellent Job!!! I guess you traced out the cutouts from the factory panels, cut out with an Exacto Knife ? Did tou use spray adhesive to attach to the factory ones ? and what did you do with the panel at the cigarette lighter ?
Shoot, I should just send mine to you,
Real nice job.

Thank you! Here's the thread with the finished pics in case someone didn't get to see them yet. https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum1/HTML/049746.html Yes, I traced the originals then cut them out with a sabre saw. No adhesives! These are 1/8 plywood pieces urethaned on both sides! I sold the factory ones on e-bay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7958240002 and made almost $200.00 doing this project considering the 4 X 8 sheet of red oak costed me $21.00 I left the cig lighter alone. A little to contoured to manipulate! Anyone can do this themselves with some time and patience. One tool is a MUST though=dremmel!
