I know the orig GM # is 10038878

The GM replacement # is 18030137

It is my understanding that the orig is like the one on my car, steel with a smooth black surface.

And the new GM replacement is a bare cast iron slave, like a Raybestos, re-boxed in a GM box.

Is that correct? And is that how you can tell by visual comparison?

Not sure on the numbers, but that fits the description of my replacement done last year. Wish they had painted the casting before installing it.

Yeah, all the "new" GM one's I've seen are the reboxed Raybestos ones... Bleah....

As soon as they come outta the plastic, I clean them with wax & grease remover - then paint them with caliper paint and hit 'em with a heat gun. Seems to work pretty well....

Thanks for the replies.

The reason I ask is... I'm going to replace my entire clutch hydraulic system this spring.

People were having a very hard time finding the original GM slave (# 10038878) 4 years ago, so finding one now is impossible.

I was going to rebuild my orig slave because it's still in pretty good shape with 50k, and rather do that then use the aftermarket slave. (GM # 18030137, Autozone, PepBoys, Advance, NAPA, etc... all the same)

So just for kicks I ran the 2 part numbers on the GM Parts Locator.....

- Obviously the GM replacement one (# 18030137 = aftermarket slave in GM box) is plentlyful.

- But to my suprise the original GM slave (# 10038878) kicked back ONE result. I was shocked.

It was located in NY at a SAAB dealer and called them yesterday. He put me on hold (which seemed like forever) while he checked for the part. He came back to the phone with a "Yes... I have it"

I asked him to describe the part. He said "Well... it's got a lot of dust on the box so it's been here a while" I asked him if it was a bare cast iron finish. <*opens box*> "No... It's a smooth black steel finish in a sealed bag"

Did I really find an original slave after all these years? Is it possible that part was hidden on the shelve and recently uploaded into their inventory when they cleaned house to be found on the parts locator?

Well I guess we will see when it arrives.

NY to PA via UPS Ground is like 2 days.

I was sure to use lots of Vaseline when I paid for it.

I'll post pictures when it arrives to verify it's the real deal.

I've often though about converting to clutch master and slave from another vehicle like a subaru or something - but generally I just rebuild old ones

I'm still trying to decide on the economic viability of doing them up in stainless.

I'd probably have to charge 150$ a piece though unless I could have them made in Asia (still a possibility)

Sorry Shaddow, no good on the spare boot.

I guess that slave I found is the real thing, cause if it wasn't... there would be 20 people telling me so.

I'm still in shock, I don't know how something slips through the cracks like that. I guess all it takes is a new parts manager or a complete overhaul of their inventory system, and these rare parts just appear on the parts locator one day.
