That's the same box from 1985, I guess they're still using it instead of having to make another. Well keeps costs down The kit (the 85 issue I have, should be the same) comes with an over the roof scoop and those side scoops, and also the stock left side scoop and blank right panel.

Also the Cadillac Escalade kit is a curbside (no engine ). Plenty of other kits to rob engines of I'll be stopping by the local hobby shop tomorrow to see if they have them in yet.

NOPE! The Escolade is based on the Chevy Surburban-Tahoe and has a Chevy truck engine. The Escolade that RM is planning to release soon is a curbside model with no engine in the kit.

Here's what I have found that will work....

The engine in the RM Shelby Series 1 car is an Oldsmobile version of the Caddy Northstar with DOHC heads and valve covers. It is best described as looking like a Northstar with an Olds intake system. I just assembed one of these last week and found that it was a little too big for an MPC kit I had planned to use it in. so I've been waiting for the RM kit to arrive.

Hey Keesee, long time, no, post? Was that Shelby kit re-issued recently? I had the day off so I spent a good part of it painting some models, my Olds Aerotech, the re-released 69 Corvair, and the new Herbie VW Beetle. What have you been working on? I have BIG plans for the case or so of Fiero kits I'm gonna buy

I've always got several projects on the burner

I think the Shelby is a current kit, I just found one at the local Wally World last week. I'm waiting to pick up the Fiero kit to see if the Shelby engine fits the 1:24 scale kit better. It was a tad too big for the MPC kit.

I gotta get me some of those Corvair kits too! LOL

Just got back from the local hobby shop and bought out 1/3 of their Fiero models (which is only two...) I told him, "These will do to start"

The first I'm going to make into a silver or gold 86 or 87 SE, the second I'm going to make another Indy. My OLD Indy (original issue 85GT kit) will be a black 85 GT once I strip the paint.

Should be, give them a call. It's made by Revell-Monogram, most all stores that carry model kits carry their products, although the Fiero is being released under their "Selected Subjects Program," meaning it is a limited release (they aren't making a lot).

Most large retail stores with VERY small model kit sections (which is most of them now, at least up here) probably won't have the kit You never know though, if you happen to be in the store go check it out, usually in the toys section.

If they don't have it, you can order it online from either of the two links I posted above in my first post. I've ordered Fiero kits from both those places (84 Fiero and 85 GT), and I highly reccomend them.

Okay guys... These kits are a part of a limited run that Revell Monogram does 4 times per year. They select a different batch of kits to reissue small runs each time. The way this system works is based on hobby shop & distributor pre orders to determine how many new kits actually get made.

We may find that these are a more common kit than normal due to a pretty good grassroots push lately to get the (better) MPC kits reissued by AMT Ertl. Keep in mind though, that the last time the Monogram kit was out (about 2000), it didn't sell very well.

This current batch of kits will be available in hobby shops or by mail order outlets. I would expect to see some at Wally World, but they won't last long.

Hobby Heaven (large mail order outlet) has the kit in stock & listed at $10.55 each. The local hobby shops will be charging 14-16 bux. eBay prices of these kits have really dropped off compared to what people were getting 6-12 months ago. It is the same exact kit as all previous issues and several collectors (myself included) got advanced word it was coming back as long as 6 months ago. Even with eBay shipping bandit's prices, I would expect to pay well under $20.00 per kit!

For reference there is an aftermarket supplier for high quality waterslide Indy Pace Car decals. I just picked up a set in May and can dig up the info on these for anyone interested. IIRC, they ran me 5 bux. I have the information, but not handy.

I know it's a couple of cheap plugs, but both of these guys have been in the hobby biz several years and very reputable. Check it out at...

Sounds like you've got some killer projects planned. I can't wait to see the pics! I'm wanting to whip out a box stocker first just to get reacquainted with the fit & finish of things. It's been at least 15 years since I've touched one.

The second kit will get the Northstar wannabe treatment using the Revell Shelby Series 1 kit.

I opened the box before I left for class earlier. Suprisingly quite a few small chages to the kit compared to my original 85 issue.

The new kit is molded in a dark red almost clear plastic (very similar to the SSP Green Hornet kit Revell just re-released a few months ago in dark green plastic) as compared to the original which was a medium red soft plastic. The instruction sheet is completely different, and has a very nice (and even accurate!) description of the Fiero at the begining. There's a few small changes to the box, most noteably the box itself being almost twice the size of the original! The kit comes with a new decal sheet, with current custom license plates.

The kit and the plastic parts included apear to be identical to the earlier kit however, unfortunately this means the window still comes molded in dark tint, and has the slightly too small sunroof. But it's very well detailed (especially for a kit from the 80's) and just fun to build! It's no Tamiya ultra-detailed Williams BMW FW-24, but well above average.

Any Fiero fan and model builder should have his head examined if he thinks about passing this kit up.

I got a kit!
I'm gonna take my time with this one. The last 85 GT I made turned out nasty!

This is as far as I got tonight. I also painted some of the other parts while paint was drying on the engine parts.

Last night, I got the bright idea to open up the grill & drill out the side scoops. The knife slipped while working on one of the scoops and now I'm sportin a half inch long, 3/16" deep "flap style" slice to my left thumb. It didn't bleed or hurt as much as several I've had in the past, but it is gonna really slow me down a couple of weeks.

I'm pretty pissed that Monogram saw fit to once again mold the kit in Red plastic with the lousy tinted windows. Styrene is by nature basically clear after it's heated and injection molded. They could have just as easily added White pigment to the mix as the crappy Red. After 30 years of complaints and frustrations with Red plastic, you'd think they would know better.

I'm waiting on a reply from 2-4 corporate type guy's who either currently work for AMT and Revell Monogram or did in the past (depending on the case of each) to give a reasonable explaination when it would have cost virtually nothing to use White pigment and mold clear glass. It's gonna be interesting to hear what they've got to say! I can make new glass, but the tail light lens is gonna take some thinking....

My kit will be painted with Plasti-Coat or Dupli-Color brand automotive touch up paint for a perfect color match to the real car. If any of you have the same idea, you absolutely need to use the high quality, sandable automotive primer also sold by both brands before aplying any color coat.

The primer is an absolute must to create a barrier & keep the "hot" thinners in these paints from eating the plastic. You can mix or match brands and be okay. Red is very hard to cover up without seeing any bleedthru. You'll need to apply a few light coats of primer and let it completely dry. At this point, you can sand anything that needs to be leveled. You'll also need to prime a second time after the first coats are fully gased out & cured to hide any bleeding. Do this about 4 hours later and everything will be fine.

The primer, color coat, & clear paint will cost you about the same price of the kit (15 bux) but you will get a very nice and correct paint job.

Sucks about the thumb I got some mold-making chemical on my thumb once when I was making some resin parts, and it ate through 2-3 layers of skin, and I couldn't sand any plastic for about a month until it healed!

I think they mold it in red for those people who just like to build the kit and only paint a few parts. When I was younger, I'd paint the engine and interior, but I'd leave the body unpainted and maybe paint the trim. The red isn't very fun to work with, but it's still better than AMT's old soft-grey they mold just about every kit in. I'd say the re-release red plastic is easier to work on than the original kit's at least. If you want to see a PITA molded kit, find an original issue of the Knight Industries 4000 from the TV Movie 'Knight Rider 2000', the entire car is molded in CLEAR RED!

I'm also going th Duplicolor route for painting. I've been using Duplicolor on all my cars lately. I wonder if I should use grey or white primer to better replicate the factory paint job? Or if I could get away with not using a clear coat, their so hard to polish without rubbing through, and having to repaint that entire panel (or whole car!) Duplicolor's help get the exact match though, I used Toyota Super White II on my 93 Celica, and it's identical to the real car's!

JetroGT, keep us posted! I've never seen in-progress pics of another persons Fiero kit

I'd recommend using the Gray primer and the Clear. Gray primer tends to be a tad harder when cured making sanding easier. I normally only use White primer when doing a White paint job.

Another great trick to completely stop the Red plastic bleed, is to shoot a thin coat of Silver paint directly onto the plastic first. Silver paint covers everything in one thin layer and it also shows even the smallest blemishes. This actually makes it easy to find areas that need body work.

I normally spray the silver, do the body work, spray a second time to make sure I'm satisfied. Next, I prime over the Silver, paint the color coats and finish up with the clear coats.

Keep the pictures coming guy's!

I haven't really done all that much with the kit.
I found a defect in the plastic after I painted it.
Doh! And it turns out that it's in most of the bodies.
I spent the last week striping and brushing all the old paint off with brake fluid.
"Don't use synthetic".
While I was at the model shop I picked up some different wheels. Much better.

Nice to see more pics I've been working on mine, too, building the first as a Pac Car with opening doors and working strobe light

The flaw in the plastic in the back there, both my new ones have it, and I'm pretty sure my original issue one does too.

After 22 years since my last Matchbox plastic airplane model, I've got the Revell-Monogram 85' Fiero GT Plastic kit 1/24
Finished building it 2 hours ago...Lots of work and fun, painting and gluing.

The famous drivable chassis.

And the result...

Cons:Hood and doors doesn't open, Lots of work, and if U'r not a pro in plastic models building, it will look O.K. but not great.
Pros: Fun to work on (If U like this stuff !?), Customizable - Colours and an option of side intake and the Indy intake scoop.
conclusion: Nice bonding with your favorite car.

More pics.

This is only my 3rd modle I've done. And the first one that I have put different wheels on. I think they actually fit better than the ones the model comes with.

I have the interior all done now. And today I started on the exterior. I have one coat of paint on these panles. I just have it sitting on the chassis to see how it's going to look. After I get the paint all smooth I will detail it.

Most hobby shops can order it even if they don't carry it. So far the best paint I've used is Tamya paints. It sprays on super smooth.
