Does your Fiero have that plastic cover that fills in the triangular hole to access the right end of the dogbone bolt? I've seen it on the earlier cars, mine doesn't have one, and the hole is bigger on the '88 cars so the earlier one won't fit.
What I have heard is GM ran out of them before the end on the run of 87's so some late 87's did not have them from new. No 88's had them nor was one ever made to fit the 88 as far as I know. I do have one in my 88 and I glued it in. If you don't do something to keep it in it will blow out and fall on the raod as you drive. One day these will be hard to find as most junk yards pull them out to get the dog bone out.

That's another thing that I have found a ton of in California junkyards! I had only seen one Fiero with one of these in place before I got here... EVERY Fiero in EVERY junkyard out here has one! Or did have until I got it!
I just checked my '88GT (I purchased new) which has all of 5,200 miles on it and there is no plastic plug in that area. The car has never been altered & I never had the factory recall work performed. It's about as "original" as it gets. Boomer
Mine didn't have one there until I installed it; had to trim a little bit to get it to fit right. I try to grab them at the junkyards when I see clean ones.
It did not come on the 88s due to the redesign of the strut towers. The hole is slightly larger than the hole on earlier models. If you try to put the plug in it will be loose. I've seen people make them fit by bending the tabs and using electrical tape. But it seems like more trouble than it's worth. It is purely cosmetic.
I also added the piece to mine. I think it gives a cleaner look.
