I picked up my newly modified decklid last week. Here are pic's of the new scoop. If you look closely you can see how high the Edelbrock Triangle air cleaner sits on a carb'd engine.
How does it look?
(Sorry I had to "brighten" the pics a little because being a black car and in the low light level in the garage I wanted to show the details.)

Looks great. I like how it adds onto the existing hump. - kv
The scoop was trimmed to match the curve of the hump then glassed in. It is centered over the carb. It is a 1970-1973 Trans Am reproduction scoop. (Got it for $29.00 on Ebay) I had to go with a repro because I didn't want the metal ring that normally attaches to the T/A air cleaner.

it looks good.. But you will now have a low air pressure area back there sucking engine out of the air cleaner!
Not with the IMSA spoiler it won't. The Spoiler scoops the air since the spoiler is wider than the body of the car and it'll be more like cowl induction. I'm also thinking about sealing the scoop to the air cleaner.
Really very nice Orief and looks really cool, but JohnnyK may have a point.
Will it vent out, and draw air in past the forward exhaust manifold or will it pull air in the other way?
I suspect the former.
It occurs to me that if there is room, an bottom scoop with a 1" X 8" insulated channel up the firewall to the level of the air breather would allow air to be pulled directly to the air breather without making contact with the manifold. Just an idea and I don't know if the air flow engineers would think it a good one.
I've also thought about running a channel in from the side scoop, but I don't think the sidescoop can deliver enough air.
Anyway, it looks really good and will certainly pull air past the filter pretty well.

Did you do it because of clearence problems with the carb, of 'cause it looks good?.....Paul
I did it because the air cleaner I wanted to use needed the clearance. With the Mr. Gasket 6.5" air cleaner or the K&N 9" you have about 1/4" of clearance under the stock 85-88 decklids (notchback and GT). I wanted to use the Edelbrock Triangle and it is about 1/2" too tall for the decklid, hence I needed the scoop. I thought about the Mustang scoop or like Tina's, But I settled on this one just to be different.

Dave, Curious as to how the underside is finished? Can we see some pics of the decklid up? But all in all it looks fantastic, your car is truely one of the best Fiero's I have ever seen
As expected...very nice Dave. I like the creative personal touch. Was wondering about the motor, is it living up to your expectations ? You no I'm impatiently waiting on that write up !!

The engine so far is better than expected. I had some issues adjusting the TV cable, But that has all been corrected.
I'll take pics tomorrow of the bottom side of the scoop and post them here.

Please elaborate. Did you adjust all the way out and then go in a notch, or cable all the way in and rotate TB???????? Paul
To set the adjustment I moved the cable all the way out then rotated the throttle and let it ratchet out. The two problems I had was the distance from the mount to the carb and how much the cable needed to move. The cable needs to move the length of the internal spring. Which on a stock TH125 is 1.5". The mount needs to be 4.5" away from the throttle.

Here's a question for all of you, The hex grate is a faded flat black right now. Should I: A) Repaint it flat black. B) Paint it gloss black C) Paint it silver D) Leave it as is
What do you think????

Well then I guess I'll paint it silver. (It only looks silver in the pics because I brightened them up to show the detail of the scoop. It is actually a faded matte black right now.)

with a carb set-up like that, one could almost use an Indy scoop and some decklid modding to produce a very nice Ram-Air system for a 5-15hp high speed boost gain...

Fieromonkey that is an interesting idea. Heres another one, what about two of those on the front end to let the air flow through and vent the heat. Grilles facing the driver. Hmmmm! kinda the reverse of the early 80's Firebird Formula. always loved those snorkles for some readon.

I had an Indy scoop. The problem is the center of the engine is offset from center. So the only Indy scoop I could use would be the race car version that had the box-like base. The one I had was the standard base. I went this way to be more unique and create a sleeker decklid.
Little advice. get rid of that air filter, and do it fast. They are garbage. Alternatively, you can just think of me when you find all that melted foam gumming up your engine. Ruined a mustang years ago with that crappy filter. The foam deteriorates, and little bits wind up in your engine. It was not a case of neglect, the filter was only about a month and a half old.

PLEASE get rid of that air filter. Had one on a 4.9 and it would suck shut when I stepped on it.Went back to the Caddy airbox an added a "civic" snorkel with a K&N cone filter.

After doing a search, I found that there have been problems with these. I'm waiting for a guy to Email me who says there is a K&N fix for it.
