Well, I went over to the POCI show that was near my house today, and I saw a very interesting Fiero.

It was based on an 86 coupe I believe, and it had a 455 V-8 in it!! And it also had the glass hatchback from a camaro on it!!

Well I got to talk to the guy (Tom Gorski is his name) about it (He also brought along 5 other Fieros, one being a silver 88GT with 1800 miles on it!! )
He told me the engine and the tranny are both from a Toronado. And he somehow welded the Fiero cradle to the Toronado Cradle and that's how he got it to fit in there. (Yes, it's mounted longitudinally (sp?))

As far has putting the Camaro hatchback on, he said it took him longer to figure that out than putting the engine in. He stretched out the rear end a little bit (I would guess about 2-3 inches) and he had to cut away a little bit of the notchback part to get all the lines to be correct. But overall, it was a really great job!

He told me that the car was his prototype, and he basically did it to see if it would break. But since it didn't, he has decided to do some more of these. He was telling me that he has a couple conversions almost ready to go. If anyone is interested in his ideas, I have his card so I could give you his number.

I'm mad I don't have any pictures though but I am probably going to buy some parts off of him, so I will see if I can get some pictures when I go there.

Well that's the end of my story. Maybe it'll inspire someone for their own variation of this theme.

No idea, but if the one in the magazine was silver, I would bet it is the same one. I saw pictures of it with aluminimum rims from a sunfire, but he had regular GT rims on it at the time.

Um, wouldn't covering the grills and converting the car into a hatch make it _very_ hot inside the car? I know I can't touch my grills after my car has been running for a while.

I'm wondering the same thing myself. I really didn't get that much into details, he has to run off somehwere. As I said, I will probably see him again and I will get pics and post more info about it.

That was a little know fact... The ever thoughtful designers at GM wanted the Fiero to be a Recreational vehicle at first. It didn't work out, but they DID keep the handy BBQ Grills for the Burgers & Dogs on the run

First off, sorry I missed out on the event guys. I was in Toronto on Sunday!

As for the hatch car, I have seen it before. It does look really good. I don't know how he disipates the heat. I was most impressed with the body extension he did in the back!

As for the heat, he must have a way to get it out of the rear. I would think it would get too hot for the engine in there if it had no air circulation.

I thought that I read something about the 89-? cars were going to have a similar hatch type design. I thougt that the caption read that GM had figured out the heat thing.
