I just installed this on my 84 2.5l Fiero.
My temperature gauge is not moving.
I check to see if it would peg when grounded and it does.
The other lead will turn on the coolant light when grounded(while car is running)
I tried to check the resisitance on the sensor but could only get a reading between the pins, not by grounding to the body of the sensor.
I checked the resistance from the body of sensor to anywhere on the block and got 0 ohms. So its grounded.
Could I have purchased the sensor for the ECM by mistake?
I replaced the sensor because the gauge wasn't working from the person I bought the car from. It seems that the sensor had been replaced by him also because it looked new.
It also looks just like the one I just bought.
Should I purchase the style of sensor that looks like the original?

There are 2 sensors. One is for the ECM, the other is for the gauge.
I think you've both replaced the one for the ECM.

The plug for the gauge sender is more square.

Well new sensor and pigtail are in and my gauge moves now.
Problem is it rises real fast and pegs off the gauge before it really is that hot.
Ohm'd out the sensor for temp vs resistance and it looks good. I'm about ready to put a bullet through the gauge
I've read a couple posts about adjusting the gauge by flicking it. That doesn't work.
I moved the needle to the left but it still climbs up to the right quickly.
Is there another connection to the gauge that can be checked?
Or is the gauge fried?

Check the wiring at the gauge (for proper resistance).

You mean, check the resistance at gauge terminal to see if the reading is the same at sensor?

Rechecked gauge with various resistors (that are on a chart somewhere else in this forum) to check accurate range and found it way off.
The grounding method showed needle pegging and using a 45 ohm resistor would also peg it.
But when checking temp relative to resistance value I found it real wacky.
Hence, the gauge is shot.
I don't know if I should replace it with another used p.o.s. or use a new aftermarket gauge and sender.
I've already sunk $80 in sensors and pigtails. Now I'd have to spend at least $60 for a used gauge that may do the same thing down the road. And an aftermarket gauge look like crap just hanging around. Any ideas?
