Where is the best place to buy rebuild kits for the headlight motors, the fiero store , eBay , or some other place? Should I get kits with plastic or metal gears? I am thinking about rebuilding both motors while the weather is cold. I want to get ahead of the summer driving time.

If this is for the 86 that you have in your signature, then you might want to check with Rodney Dickman.

I just got gears, gaskets and plugs in a kit (2) from the Fireo store. I have a 87 GT. The parts worked just fine. I did both because there is still snow on the ground! I'm not sure if you have gen 1 or gen 2 motors.

I highly recommend not going with plastic replacement gears. Use Rodney's alum. gears. He also includes a great grease with the kit and it makes a big difference!

You'd be a fool to not go with Rodney Dickman's parts. Do it right the first time.

I would suggest strongly that everyone take their 87-88 headlight motors apart first before ordering new 87/88 plastic gears. Gear failures in the 87/88 headlight motors are very, very rare. The aftermarket plastic gears available today for the 87/88 headlight motors are most likely made of a much lower grade plastic than the GM factory original gears. In the years to come you will probably see these new aftermarket plastic gears failing in a relatively short period of time.

Many C5 Corvette and 93-03 Firebird owners call me crying the blues that they put in aftermarket plastic headlight gears and they failed in a few weeks.
