I would have guessed many of the options already mentioned, but I'll throw out... maybe a broken egr valve housing allowing the thing to bounce around with exhaust pulses?
sounds a lot like the baffle in my muffler did.

nope don't think so cause there is no noise the the clutch pushed in.
call me crazy but I've never had a noisy tob with no pressure applied, usually the other way around, right when applied. that is a nasty noise... Are you sure the crank doesnt have endplay? Just a thought.

Sounds strange because the sound does not change frequency with throttle changes would think something loose and rattling. Perhaps a loose heat shield somewhere. Come on tell us what you found..

Ok for anyone who miss understood me the transmission makes noise with it in neutral, and quiets down when clutch peddle is pushed in. For all I know it could be the transmission i'll know more when i pull it apart. After all it is only a getrag 282 that took a beating from hell
