I'm looking for someone who has a Getrag and (ideally) a 2.8 engine out of the car that can do a test. This is in reference to this topic: https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/120393.html I talked to Archie yesterday and he suggested to way to check for clearance would be to install a pressure plate but no clutch disc on an engine. That would show the highest the fingers would sit on the pressure plate. My suggestion would be to install some spacers (or a clutch disc worn to the rivets to mimic a totally worn out clutch disc). One would need to somehow figure out that dimension. Easy if you have a dial caliper. With the throwout bearing in place I need to see if there is any room left behind the throw out bearing.

Or if anyone has a Getrag in the car and the clutch is well worn and in dire need of replacing one can do this test in the car easily. Just remove the slave and rotate the lever on the trans and measure the distance it moves.

Hi, I have a 2.8 and a getrag on a cradle sitting in a storage area I rent, but I don't know the clutch condition. If You tell me what I can do to help you I think I may have the time before I leave FRI to go to VA and do some work on my trailer for a couple of days. I'll PM you my phone number and you can call so we can talk about this. Today is out as it is so cold that if I had to take a leak I'd have a real hard time of it.

The test is to push the cast steel lever back and forth and measure the amount it moves at the very top. Should be less than 1" Archie says he had a car at one time with a new GM factory clutch and he measured .920". As the clutch wears that amount will diminish. Since you do not know how much surface material you have on the clutch disc we would not know if it is the minimum amount but it would be good information. One could guess the clutch that is in it is mostly worn?

I have one out on the floor with new componets installed and can give the thickness of a new clutch if that will help.

Rodney,

Drove up to the storage area I rent with calipers, dial indicators and some tools. I failed badly. I removed the slave cylindar and coolant tube , set up 2' dial indicator but could not find a way to rotate arm. It looks like I will need to remove the exaust system and fab som kind of a lever so I have enough umph to move the lever thru its travel arc. Really sorry I couldn't be of more help and when I do bring this cradle and motor to my work shop sometime latter this month I'll be glad to get that travel number if some other member hasn't already provided it.

Regards, Bob

For the moment scratch the measurement. I worked on this again today. Does anyone have a picture of a throwout bearing on the sleeve as far back as it can go? Might be kinda hard to get a picture as it is in a bell housing.

It shouldn't be that hard to rotate it if you're going in the correct direction. Rodney needs you to pull back on the arm, compressing the slave rod into the slave cylinder, marking the location of the arm, then rotating the arm away from the slave cylinder until it comes to a stop when the throw out bearing comes to rest against the pressure plate fingers. Compressing the slave cylinder shouldn't take more than two fingers to do it... at least that's all it took on mine.

My design now does not sit behind the fingers so this point is no longer applicable. But I do not have a throw out bearing on hand. I can probably find one locally at a parts place to use just to see the clearances. But if someone can show me a picture that may be sufficient. Also a picture of the end of the throw out bearing. I need to know how close the throw out bearing gets to the aluminum case/bearing face in the full retraced position. This should be the last piece of the puzzle for the moment. I'm very happy with my design. I think it will work very well. It will be easy for anyone to install. No need to go to a machine shop etc. It will take time to get the parts made. I should have these kits available in early spring.

I don't know what you mean by a picture of the end of the TOB but here are pics of both faces.

Here is the input shaft snout.

The input shaft with the TOB almost all the way out.

With the TOB all the way in the back of the TOB touches in the back.... these are the best pics I could get with my camera.

Thanks. I can see what I need to do now. It will only take time now to get the drawings made, parts made, fixtures made etc. But I will have these by spring. Long live the 282 Getrags!!
