Hi all,
Looking to get my fan back to factory setting on 86 GT, as far as a relay controlling the fan rather than a toggle switch. Currently I have a black wire running from the front firewall connecting to a toggle switch and another wire coming from the other side of the switch going into a fuse socket! Clearly this is not the way it should be! So I need to know: what I need, the setup of the wires, and pictures would he great!

Thanks everyone,
Tony

Well, for starters, here's what the fan circuit is supposed to look like:

You'll have to route around in the vicinity of where the fan relay used to be to find the four wires that are supposed to go to it.

For starters, is the original fan relay still in place? It is located beneath the left headlight assembly on the forward bulkhead. The temperature switch for the coolant fan is on top of the intake manifold next to the water outlet (thermostat) housing. The temp. switch for fan will be a single terminal. If these items are in place and the harness/connectors are there then we can move on to troubleshooting the original problem with the fan control.

Unplug the wire from the fan switch connector. Then turn the key to the on position. Then using an straightened paperclip ground the wire in the connector of the fan switch. Does the fan come on?

If so everything from that point forward is good. The only thing left in question is the temperature switch itself (which is most likely good also)

So i grounded it out but nope nothing! Not to say i wasnt surprised! The power to the fan is coming straight from the fuse box via a switch that was purchased probably at Radioshack or something! And that switch wasnt on so obviously the fan wont come on. The real problem probably lies lie in how this fan gets power and what tells it to turn on and when no to!

First step is going to be turning the wiring back to factory stock, as per the diagram above. Once that's done, you can start troubleshooting individual components. Check at the motor and follow the wires, that's probably where it was hacked up.

Open the front trunk and figure out where those wires are going to. Probably right to the motor. Also at about 18 seconds in to the video, looks like another mystery wire - a yellow one with a spade connector on the end?

Does the fan come on at the same temp that the rear blower motor comes on?

Because the PO's nasty wiring - he is sending +12v up to the fan, he apparently dropped the fan relay.

The stock wiring of the fan relay has the control wire getting grounded to activate the relay. The relay then applies power to the fan.

Can you do a shot of the wiring up front at the fan?

Ok cool thanks! So technically I can try to wire the fan wire into the blower motor fuse for it ton turn on automatically at the right temp? Would that work?

No

You will have to restore the fan relay up front.

Most likely you have the control wiring still in place and the guy just cut the the output wire of the fan relay that supplies the power to the fan. Then he ran a different supply wire and dropped the use of the relay.

So most likely you will have to resplice the power output of the fan relay to the fan, and then you will have to fix what was up with the fan relay. Most likely a bad relay.

The relay is located where? Is that the one in front of the driver side headlight? Because that one is still there

We have Flynn in now.

It is up front under the front 'hood'

It looks like this
http://www.rockauto.com/cat...249152&parttype=3060

Relay is just to the drivers side of the radiator in front of the headlight bucket.
The large red wire should be hot, check the green stripped one for a ground with the ac switch on.
Check the brown wire for key on power and check the fuse.

The Black/Red output of the relay most likely no longer runs to the fan.

*UPDATE*

Traced back the wires and found that a fusible link was cut and the wire that goes to the fan for power was cut and a new one was run to where the switch under the steering wheel was. So I reconnected the old wires again and it all work great! My one other concern (and fixing this might end all of my mysterious wire problems in this car) is the white wire that connects to some unit that sits in front of the radiator fan (if your on the driver side looking at the hood from the side, its on the right). This wire runs from that unit, all the way to the foot-well of the driver side and is not connected to anything. What is this wire for (i think its for the A/C?) and what does it have to connect to?

Thanks
Tony

That's a horn for an aftermarket alarm system. Would explain the other weird wires to nowhere under there, there was probably an alarm installed at one time.
